Taylor Eyes Cup Progression

Written by Newcastle Utd

Steven Taylor is eyeing a place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup, as United travel to Crystal Palace

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Steven Taylor is eyeing a place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup, to help kick-start Newcastle United's season into life.

The centre-back could well be involved in the Magpies' cup tie at Crystal Palace on Wednesday night  (8pm kick-off), having played in the previous round's victory over Gillingham last month.

And with United yet to triumph in the Barclays Premier League this season, Taylor hopes they come away from Selhurst Park with a win and are able to take that form into back into the top flight at the weekend.

"You would like to think a win would give us a real boost," the long-serving defender told nufc.co.uk.

"It didn't happen after Gillingham but I would like to think that if we win on Wednesday we can build on this.

"Selhurst Park will be a difficult place to go, it's a tight pitch and they will make the game very difficult, as they did up here a few weeks ago.

"They have good players who can cause some problems and are a very hard-working side. We will have to match that first and foremost, and then hopefully our quality shines through after.

"It will be completely different. Playing in the Premier League and the Capital One Cup are completely different scenarios.

"The main thing is you have to turn up. What I've learnt over the years of playing in this competition is that you have to put your foot in and have a good level of commitment.

"If you don't, you lose the game - it's as simple as that."

And while the Barclays Premier League is United's bread and butter, Taylor would love to go all the way in a cup, and give the Magpies' faithful something to really cheer about.

"We want to do well in it, of course we do," he said.

"The Premier League is the most important thing for us, of course it is, but everyone would like to do well in a cup as well, and why not this one?

"We will go out there on Wednesday, try to win the game and hopefully end up in the next round."
