Wilkin: "It Will Be A Privilege To Play Here"

Written by Newcastle Utd

Super League star Jon Wilkin cannot wait to step out at St. James' Park for the Magic Weekend next May

One of Super League's star players has spoken of his excitement at the prospect of appearing at St. James' Park, after the stadium won the right to hold rugby league's Magic Weekend in May 2015.

St. Helens forward Jon Wilkin, who has represented England and Great Britain, was in the North-East alongside the Super League trophy on Wednesday afternoon following the announcement that Tyneside is to host the showcase event.

"As a player, I've visualised walking out of the tunnel into St. James' Park and I'm blown away by the stadium," Wilkin said.

"It's a beautiful stadium and it'll be a privilege to get the opportunity to play at one of the historic and most iconic stadiums in the country.

"When you walk out at places like this, you get to understand what sport is all about. We hope that people buy into our sport because it's a great game."

All 12 Super League teams will converge on St. James' Park next May for a full round of league fixtures, with six games across Saturday 30th, and Sunday 31st, May. Specific fixtures and times will be confirmed in November.

"For people who haven't attended before, it's a carnival atmosphere," Wilkin explained.

"There's very much a party feel with music, entertainment and lots of things for families going on around the stadium. It's a real event for people to look forward to in the area."

Newcastle United managing director, Lee Charnley, said: "Newcastle United are delighted to be hosting such as prestigious event as the Magic Weekend in May 2015.

"We are looking forward to welcoming the Super League teams and their fans plus, of course, a host of local supporters to St. James' Park, which we are certain will prove to be a tremendous venue for such a showpiece occasion.

"With the Rugby World Cup following in the autumn, it's going to be a great time for both rugby and sports fans in the region.

"This event will not only generate revenue for the club but will also benefit a range of businesses and our partners across Tyneside."
