Newcastle United duo Moussa Sissoko and Remy Cabella helped France claim a 1-0 victory over Spain on Thursday night.

Sissoko was handed a starting spot for the friendly at the Stade de France, in Paris, while Cabella had to settle for an appearance off the substitutes' bench in the second period.

And if was a former Magpie who settled the contest in the 73rd minute, as Loic Remy fired home a superb left-footed effort.

Midfielder Sissoko had a key role to play in the goal, teeing up Mathieu Valbuena, whose cut back was curled past David de Gea by Remy.

Cabella was then introduced for Valbuena, to win his second Les Bleus cap, while Sissoko made way for Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin.

Elsewhere, in Bari, Holland slipped to a 2-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Italy.

United new boy Daryl Janmaat started at right-back for the Dutch and lasted 72 minutes before being replaced by Gregory van der Wiel. Goalkeeper Tim Krul was an unused substitute.

In under-21 action, Ayoze Perez made his Spain debut as a second half substitute in a 1-0 away at Hungary.

Perez entered the fray as a 76th-minute replacement, by which time the only goal of the game had already been scored.
