Loan Watch: Forest On Fire

Written by Newcastle Utd

A round-up of United's loanees who were in action across Europe over the weekend

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles helped Nottingham Forest continue their charge towards the Championship play-off places with a 2-1 home victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The pair played the full 90 minutes at the City Ground, as the Reds came from behind to secure all three points and move them to within nine points of a top-six spot.

Goalkeeper Darlow saved well from Patrick Bamford early on but was helpless to prevent Grant Leadbitter's cross evading everyone and looping into the net.

However, Gary Gardner responded within seven minutes, and then Dexter Blackstock struck what proved to be the winner midway through the second half.

In the Vanarama Conference, Adam Campbell was a late substitute for Gateshead, who slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Braintree.

The 20-year-old striker was called from the bench on 72 minutes, but by that time the Heed were already trailing to Kenny Davis' penalty, and Campbell was unable to help salvage anything from the contest.

North of the border, Haris Vuckic started for Rangers in their Scottish Championship fixture at Cowdenbeath on Saturday, which ended goalless.

In difficult conditions - with strong winds and a heavy pitch - the Gers struggled to find a breakthrough at Central Park, and Slovenian forward Vuckic was replaced after 80 minutes.

Fellow Magpies loanees Shane Ferguson, Gael Bigirimana, Remie Streete and Kevin Mbabu were not involved.

In Italy, Davide Santon's Inter Milan came from two goals down to salvage a draw away at Napoli in Serie A action.

Santon played the full match at right-back for Roberto Mancini's side, who will be happy with a battling point.

Finally, in France, Sylvain Marveaux was unable to inspire Guingamp to a Ligue 1 home victory over Lille.

Marveaux was handed a starting role in an advanced position but was replaced after 61 minutes of the 1-0 defeat.
