Dutchman Daryl's Debut Disappointment

Written by Newcastle Utd

Daryl Janmaat spoke to nufc.co.uk about his Magpies bow, and how the team's performance bodes well

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Daryl Janmaat was disappointed to suffer defeat on his Newcastle United debut, but insists there were plenty of positives to take from a spirited display against Manchester City.

The full-back, signed from Feyenoord last month, pulled on the Magpies shirt for the first time in competitive action, but a goal late in each half from David Silva and Sergio Aguero secured all three points for City.

United had plenty of chances on an emotional but entertaining afternoon at St. James' Park, with Moussa Sissoko, Ayoze Perez, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere all threatening.

And Janmaat has seen enough in that showing to know his new team could have a good season.

"We are disappointed because we felt we deserved more than this," the Dutch international told nufc.co.uk following the final whistle.

"It's a shame that we didn't at least get a point, especially with the way we played in the second half. We had a lot of good chances but you have to score one, and we didn't do that.

"There were lots of positives to take from the game and we have to take them on board now and move forward.

"When you can play like that against the champions, you know you have done something right. But that is why we are so disappointed - because we played so well."

Having plyed his trade in his native Holland for the entirety of his career before his summer switch, what did Janmaat make of a first outing in the Barclays Premier League?

"Of course it was tougher," he explained.

"This is the best league in the world and we were playing against a great team like Manchester City first up.

"But you want to test yourself against the best and that is why I came here.

"It is fantastic to be part of this club and the fans were amazing today. You could hear them from the first minute all the way through and they can really help us in a lot of games this season."
