Cheick Tiote returns for Newcastle United as they travel to Sheffield Wednesday in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night (7.45pm kick-off).

The midfielder only returned to training earlier this week, having been given extra time off to recover following his World Cup exploits for the Ivory Coast, and captains a Magpies team mixed with youth and experience at Hillsborough.

There are also first starts in a Newcastle shirt for Slovakian defender Lubo Satka and summer signing Ayoze Perez.

United will line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with goalkeeper Rob Elliot behind a back four of Satka, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara.

Tiote and Mehdi Abeid will anchor the visitors' midfield, with Gabriel Obertan, Adam Armstrong and Perez just ahead of them.

And that trio will be tasked with providing the ammunition for lone front man Emmanuel Riviere, who arrived from Monaco earlier this month and impressed on his first two outings for the Club in New Zealand.

Manager Alan Pardew has named a mainly youthful substitutes' bench for the warm-up game, with Dutch international Vurnon Anita the only exception to that rule.

Joining Anita among the replacements are Jak Alnwick, Remie Streets, Gael Bigirimana, Haris Vuckic, Alex Gilliead, Jonathyn Quinn and Adam Campbell.

Sheffield Wednesday (4-4-2): Chris Kirkland; Liam Palmer, Glenn Loovens (c), Dejan Kelhar, Joe Mattock; Chris Maguire, Giles Coke, Sam Hutchinson, Jacques Maghoma; Gary Madine, Atdhe Nuhiu

Substitutes: Joe Wildsmith, Roy Contout, Matt Young, Rhys McCabe, Rafa Floro, Kamil Zayatte, Franck Betra, Ryan Croasdale, Cameron Dawson, Michail Antonio
