Pardew To Give Youth Its Chance At Wednesday

A younger Newcastle United squad will travel to the Steel City to take on Sheffield Wednesday in friendly action

A younger Newcastle United squad will travel to the Steel City to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night (7.45pm kick-off) , manager Alan Pardew has confirmed.

United take on the Championship side in a pre-season friendly just 48 hours after flying home from their successful tour of New Zealand, which saw back-to-back victories secured against Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix.

Though an experienced squad featuring the likes of Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Siem de Jong took part in the two friendly games on the Carlsberg Football United 2014 tour, Pardew says the trip to Hillsborough will provide an opportunity for some of the younger members of his squad to stake a first-team claim.

"Having just got back from New Zealand, some of the lads need a bit of a rest so tomorrow will be a chance for some of the younger lads in the squad," the Magpies boss told nufc.co.uk.

"We'll be looking for a result like the two we got on the tour and a good performance as well, and hopefully some of the lads can perform well and give us something to think about."
