Tiote Toppled By Cool Colombia

Written by Newcastle Utd

Cheick Tiote was unable to inspire his nation to another World Cup victory as Ivory Coast slipped to defeat against Colombia

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote was unable to inspire his nation to another World Cup victory as Ivory Coast slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Colombia on Thursday.

Tiote played the full 90 minutes for the second successive game in the Brazil-based finals but a quickfire second-half double secured all three points for the South Americans in Group C.

Just past the hour mark, James Rodriguez headed home at the near post from a corner, and on 70 minutes Juan Quintero's composed finish doubled Colombia's advantage.

Former Arsenal man Gervinho halved the deficit with a fine individual effort but Ivory Coast were unable to turn some late pressure into an equaliser.

Despite the defeat, Tiote and Co could still reach the last 16, having won their opening Group C fixture against Japan. They face Greece in their final group match on Tuesday (9pm kick-off).
