Peter Beardsley's Newcastle youngsters set off for the Hong Kong Football Club Citibank Soccer Sevens on Tuesday afternoon

Ten of Newcastle United's youngsters are preparing to fly to the Far East on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the Hong Kong Football Club Citibank Soccer Sevens.

The competition takes place in Happy Valley over the weekend of Saturday, 25th May and Sunday, 26th May.

Last year, United were beaten by Leicester in the final while in 2012 a side featuring Paul Dummett, James Tavernier, Lubo Satka and Adam Campbell lifted the trophy.

Jak Alnwick was in goal for the Magpies on both occasions and returns this time around.

Rolando Aarons was also part of last year's squad but for the rest of the group, Hong Kong will be unchartered territory.

"It's a brilliant experience and a brilliant week," Football Development Manager Peter Beardsley told nufc.co.uk.

"I've said to them that they've got to make the most of if and enjoy it because this is what football's about.

"We've got a lot of good kids and we could have chosen any ten, really, but it's a good squad and they're happy with each other, which is one of the main things.

"They almost picked the tenth one themselves - it got to the stage where it could have been any one of four or five so I asked them to pick and they chose Adam Laidler, so it's worked out well."

As well as coaching the side, Beardsley will be playing for Wallsend Boys Club alongside the likes of Michael Bridges and Alan Thompson in the Masters section of the competition.

The Newcastle United squad is: Rolando Aarons, Jak Alnwick, Daniel Barlaser, Macaulay Gillesphey, Alex Gilliead, Adam Laidler, Ryan McKinnon, Greg Olley, Jonathyn Quinn, Callum Williams.
