Arm's Strong Start

Adam Armstrong scored while Freddie Woodman kept a clean sheet as England's European Under-17 Championships campaign got off to a perfect start

Magpies pair Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman both started as England kicked off their UEFA European Under-17 Championships campaign with a comfortable victory over hosts Malta.

Goalkeeper Woodman kept a clean sheet while forward Armstrong scored the second goal in a 3-0 win for John Peacock's side on Friday afternoon.

Armstrong - who scored seven times in qualifying and told nufc.co.uk earlier this week that his aim was to be the leading goalscorer at the competition - threatened inside the first minute when his 22-yard strike hit a post.

But he wasn't to be denied and, after Fulham's Patrick Roberts put the Young Lions in front, Armstrong swept home from ten yards.

Roberts added the third in the second half then, towards the end, Armstrong hit the woodwork for a second time following a superb solo run.

Earlier in the day, Scotland lost 2-0 to Portugal in their opening game of the tournament. Newcastle defender Kyle Cameron played the whole game.
