Written by Newcastle Utd

The big moments from Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Southampton as Newcastle were well beaten at St. Mary's

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor
At St. Mary's Stadium

Southampton 4 (Rodriguez 45, 89, Lambert 49, Lallana 70)
Newcastle United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: It's all over here at St. Mary's and Southampton have won 4-0. It could have been more, too, but for some fine saves from Elliot in the Newcastle goal. Click here for a match report.

SUB-MDC-icons90mins: Lallana is replaced by youngster Sam Gallagher and there will be four minutes of stoppage time.

GOAL-MDC-icons89mins - SOUTHAMPTON GOAL (4-0): Substitute Ramirez picks out the run of Rodriguez, who has all the time in the world to take a couple of touches, cut inside and drill through the legs of Elliot from 12 yards.

86mins: Fabricio Coloccini plays a good ball out to Dummett who delivers a wonderful cross. De Jong nudges it towards Gouffran who looks set to score before Shaw throws himself in the way with a great block.

84mins: Elliot makes another smart save to deny Rodriguez, whose low shot from 18 yards was creeping in before the keeper got a touch.

SUB-MDC-icons83mins: Lambert comes off for Gaston Ramirez and receives a standing ovation.

80mins: More great play from Lallana as he floats the ball over to Rodriguez, whose header goes behind off Santon.

SUB-MDC-icons79mins: Paul Dummett replaces Sissoko, who appears to have suffered a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old slots in on the left-hand side of midfield.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons76mins: Haidara becomes the first player booked as he dives in late on Ward-Prowse.

75mins: Gouffran loses out to Rodriguez, who plays in Ward-Prowse but he is denied by another superb save from Elliot. Then the ball is played back in and Rodriguez's header hits a post before Ward-Prowse is denied again by Elliot.

SUB-MDC-icons73mins: Southampton make their first substitution as Morgan Schneiderlin replaces Steven Davis.

72mins: Papiss Cisse races onto Vurnon Anita's pass and tries to sidefoot past Boruc but the keeper blocks and from the resulting corner, Tiote shoots wide.

GOAL-MDC-icons70mins - SOUTHAMPTON GOAL (3-0): Lallana becomes the third of Southampton's World Cup hopefuls to find the net and this strike is the best of the match. He picks the ball up 30 yards from goal before carrying it for a few steps, then unleashing a thunderbolt past Elliot who has had no chance with any of the goals.

54mins: Moussa Sissoko forces the issue with a great run to take him past three defenders and then he drills a great ball across the face of goal but nobody is there to touch it home.

52mins: De Jong gets in a looping shot on the turn which Boruc gathers under pressure from Gouffran.

GOAL-MDC-icons49mins - SOUTHAMPTON GOAL (2-0): The Saints double their advantage; Lallana teases Haidara and then cuts inside Gouffran before delivering a wonderful cross to Lambert at the far post. He takes a touch then smashes home from six yards. De Jong may have been fouled in the build-up, and Lallana might have been offside as he received the ball but nobody can deny that the hosts deserve to be 2-0 up.

47mins: Southampton begin the second half on the front foot once again. Rodriguez stands up a cross towards Lambert, whose header is cleared off the line by Massadio Haidara.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Newcastle get the second period underway and Pardew has made two changes - Davide Santon is on for Yanga-Mbiwa and Luuk de Jong replaces Ben Arfa.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: Newcastle looked to have survived a first-half Southampton onslaught but were caught out on the stoke of half time. The biggest plus point is that they are only one goal behind when they really could be losing heavily. Click here for a half-time report.

GOAL-MDC-icons45mins - SOUTHAMPTON GOAL (1-0): There's more than a hint of controversy as Southampton finally take the lead. United are convinced that Lambert is offside as he races down the right and indeed most of the defenders stop before realising that play has continued. By then, it's too late - Lambert squares to Rodriguez and the forward can't miss this time - and doesn't. There will be one minute of stoppage time.

44mins: Elliot is having a super game here as he makes his best save yet to keep out Rodriguez. Ward-Prowse floats the ball towards the head of Lambert and he nods across goal to his strike partner who seems certain to score from six yards out, only for United's stand-in shot-stopper to scurry across his goal and push it away from the bottom corner.

42mins: Shaw embarks upon a direct run past Hatem Ben Arfa and Yanga-Mbiwa and his low cross is well intercepted by Williamson.

33mins: Newcastle nearly take the lead totally against the run of play. Their first meaningful attack sees Gouffran steal in on the left-hand side of the box, jink past Jose Fonte and poke a shot towards goal which Artur Boruc does well to block with an outstretched leg.

29mins: Elliot comes to claim the resulting corner but fails to gather properly and the ball runs for Lambert, who tries to lob into the unguarded goal but just overcooks it and his effort sails over.

28mins: Lambert releases Jack Cork and the midfielder's shot from 20 yards takes a deflection which sends the ball wide.

27mins: Luke Shaw delivers from the left and Rodriguez gets a faint flick to the ball but can't direct it on target.

23mins: Rodriguez fires just wide and Williamson and Cheick Tiote exchange words with each other - Williamson clearly felt that it was too easy for the Southampton man to find room on the edge of the box.

22mins: Yoan Gouffran plays a horrible pass which Southampton intercept and Rodriguez slides in Lambert, whose powerful shot is beaten away by Elliot. The goalkeeper is helping to keep his side in this on what is his first league start of the season but surely he can only keep this red tide at bay for so long.

20mins: Williamson is forced into conceding a corner after another dangerous ball from Chambers and from the resulting corner, Dejan Lovren sends a free header off target.

18mins: Now Lallana heads wide under pressure from Mike Williamson after Chambers delivers from the right again. Newcastle are very fortunate not to be at least one goal behind.

16mins: Elliot to the rescue again - Adam Lallana's slide-rule pass opens up the United defence and Rickie Lambert races through but the Magpies goalkeeper stays big and throws up a hand to parry his strike away.

13mins: Southampton are all over Newcastle here. Rodriguez is denied for a third time today by a superb Elliot save, with the goalkeeper flying to his right to get down to the striker's header, then James Ward-Prowse shoots wide from the follow-up. Alan Pardew, watching from the stand here after his stadium ban ended, will not be best pleased with his side's start - but it's still 0-0.

12mins: Another big chance for Rodriguez goes begging - Calum Chambers crosses from the right and the ex-Burnley forward gets above Yanga-Mbiwa at the far post but heads wide from eight yards. The home side could be 2-0 up here.

8mins: The home fans are celebrating - until they realise that Jay Rodriguez has somehow hit the side-netting and not the back of the net. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa looked in control as a long ball was played forward but missed it at the last second and the Saints striker raced onto it and went one-on-one with Rob Elliot. Rather than aim across goal, however, he went for the near post and was off target when he really should have scored.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Southampton, wearing their red home kits, take kick-off with the Magpies in yellow and blue on a sunny day on the South Coast.
