Gilliead Gets England Call

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle's Alex Gilliead has received a late call-up for England's under-18 friendly against Belgium

Alex Gilliead has been drafted into the England under-18 squad for Tuesday's friendly against Belgium.

The Shotley Bridge-born teenager captained Newcastle as they beat Derby in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup on Sunday.

He'd been on standby for the original 16-man squad but received a late call-up after a couple of withdrawals from Neil Dewsnip's group.

The forward, who can also play on either wing, turned 18 earlier this month.

Gilliead travelled to St. George's Park to link up with the rest of the team on Monday evening. He has won eight caps at under-17 level and four at under-16 level but awaits his under-18 international bow.

The behind-closed-doors match will kick off at 2pm.
