Gouffran "Ashamed" Of Spurs Defeat

Fit-again Yoan Gouffran pulled no punches in his assessment of Newcastle's 4-0 home defeat by Tottenham

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Fit-again Yoan Gouffran pulled no punches in his assessment of Newcastle United's 4-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, admitting everyone in the Magpies' dressing room was "ashamed" of the result.

Two Emmanuel Adebayor strikes, along with one each from Paulinho and Nacer Chadli gave the North London outfit their first victory at St. James' Park in nearly a decade, as they eased to three points.

It was Gouffran's first appearance in almost a month following a groin injury, and while the French forward was glad to be back on the pitch again, he knows United's performance was unacceptable.

"We are really disappointed, downbeat and feel very ashamed, especially for the fans" Gouffran told nufc.co.uk.

"We have got injuries and suspensions but we don't want to use that as an excuse.

"Everything went wrong. From the first minute we just couldn't get into the match and then we conceded pretty soon after. We paid for that and couldn't get going.

"Lloris made three or four good saves at 2-0 and if we had scored then maybe we would have had a chance to get back into the game and change the outcome. But that wasn't to be and we wouldn't have deserved it.

"For me, it was good to be back as I was getting a bit sick of waiting to be back to full fitness.

"Physically I perhaps wasn't at my best but that will come with games and hopefully I can keep on playing and help the team get back to winning games again.

"I'm just sorry for today. It wasn't good enough from any of us. We have to improve a lot before the Aston Villa game, and we will. We will work hard every day to change this situation."
