Newcastle v Sunderland: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The main moments and big incidents from Saturday's disappointing derby day defeat to Sunderland

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

At St. James' Park

Newcastle United 0
Sunderland 3 (Borini pen 19, Johnson 23, Colback 80)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins: Phil Dowd blows for full time and for the second season in a row, Newcastle have lost 3-0 to Sunderland at St. James' Park. Click here for the match report.

90+1mins: Marveaux plays the ball across the box to Ameobi, whose shot is deflected just wide.

90mins: There will be three more minutes to play.

SUB-MDC-icons89mins: De Jong lays the ball off to Marveaux but his shot goes over the bar before Sunderland introduce Craig Gardner for Borini, who opened the scoring with that first half penalty.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons87mins: Dummett steams in with a hard tackle on Bardsley and is booked by Dowd.

GOAL-MDC-icons80mins - SUNDERLAND GOAL (0-3): Ben Arfa loses out in midfield, claiming a foul, and Sunderland break swiftly with Sung-Yeung playing in Colback. The flame-haired midfielder gets into the box and smashes a shot beyond Krul, who has no chance. It's a repeat of last year's scoreline.

79mins: Sung-Yeung's ball from the left goes all the way to Larsson, who fires wide as Dummett dives in to narrow the angle.

SUB-MDC-icons77mins: Gus Poyet makes his first change, replacing Johnson with Seb Larsson.

SUB-MDC-icons74mins: Here's Newcastle's final change - Sylvain Marveaux is on for Anita.

73mins: It should be game over - Altidore breaks through and tries to round Krul but the United keeper smothers at the feet of the American.

72mins: Nearly another derby goal for Ameobi - he chests down Krul's long punt and tries to loft the ball over Mannone but the keeper spreads himself well to block. Then from the corner, Ameobi's header is cleared off the line.

70mins: De Jong gets the ball into his feet, turns and shoots from just outside the box but it's too close to Mannone. The Dutchman has given United a bit of punch up front though.

69mins: Yung-Seung fires off target from 20 yards out after a decent Sunderland move but the game's still alive.

66mins: Johnson jinks his way past Dummett and into the box before curling a low effort against the base of the post.

65mins: Ben Arfa's right-wing corner is met by Ameobi but his header goes narrowly wide.

SUB-MDC-icons64mins: Santon glides forwards and plays the ball to Tiote, whose 25-yard shot is heading towards the top corner before Manone claws it away. Santon is then replaced by Paul Dummett.

62mins: Colback slides in Altidore, whose goalbound shot is bravely blocked at point-blank range by Taylor. After a strong start to the second half from United, Sunderland are beginning to weather the storm and pose more problems of their own.

61mins: Altidore shrugs off Tiote, which takes some doing, then sees his shot blocked but it falls to Colback who drags just wide of Krul's far post.

59mins: Tiote makes a big tackle on Sung-Yeung to send Sissoko away and he finds De Jong, but after the Dutchman tries to cut inside he loses out. The ball then runs to Tiote but the skipper's shot is too close to Mannone.

56mins: Johnson sends a free kick dipping over the bar after Sung-Yeung was fouled, but Krul looked to have it covered.

53mins: Sissoko rolls the ball out to Debuchy, whose driven cross is controlled by Ameobi. He then goes down in the box claiming a penalty but Phil Dowd, who has already given one to Sunderland at the same end, isn't interested.

52mins: Newcastle break intelligently from their own half, with Sissoko finding Anita, who played the ball up to De Jong. The Dutchman laid the ball off to Ben Arfa, then got it back and sent a low shot into the arms of Mannone.

49mins: Shola Ameobi wins a free kick 30 yards from goal. Ben Arfa rolls it to Sissoko but his shot hits the wall.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Luuk de Jong is on for Sammy Ameobi to make his Newcastle debut. Sunderland get the second half underway.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: The players head down the tunnel with boos ringing in their ears and one would imagine that Newcastle's players will be given the hairdryer treatment from Alan Pardew. After a decent start, they fell behind to Borini's 19th minute penalty, then saw Johnson double the lead and Sunderland have rarely been troubled since. A big second half performance is required, with the Magpies staring a third straight derby defeat in the face. Click here for a half time report.

45+1mins: Anita plays a clever ball into the path of Sissoko, but his cross flashes across goal with nobody able to get to it.

45mins: There will be a minimum of two minutes of stoppage time.

44mins: Sammy Ameobi dribbles past Johnson and Colback before finding Santon, but the Italian's cross is headed away. The younger Ameobi has shown some flashes for United on a disappointing afternoon so far. Then Newcastle come again but Shola Ameobi fires over the bar from just outside the box.

42mins: Good footwork from Sissoko tees up Shola Ameobi for a half-chance on the edge of the box but his strike lacks the power to trouble Mannone.

41mins: The impressive Alonso pops up on the right and fires in a shot which is blocked before United clear their lines.

38mins: Debuchy is beaten too easily by Alonso, whose cross finds Altidore and the American is able to get in a low shot which is straight at Krul.

33mins: Alonso digs out a great cross from the left and Johnson gets in front of Santon at the far post but heads wide under pressure from the Italian.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons32mins: Santon is booked for a late tackle on Ki Sung-Yeung but Newcastle manage to defend the resulting free kick.

27mins: So close as Shola Ameobi dribbles into the box and the ball almost falls for Debuchy but is cleared, then the ball bobbles around in the area as Tiote's shot hits Sissoko but again the Black Cats scramble away.

25mins: Anita shoots over the bar as Newcastle look for a route back into the game - they need a goal fast.

GOAL-MDC-icons23mins - SUNDERLAND GOAL (0-2): It goes from bad to worse for United. Jozy Altidore's clever flick releases Colback and his shot loops off Taylor but is somehow kept out by Krul, who changes direction in mid-air. However, the ball falls perfectly for Johnson at the far post and he makes no mistake.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons20mins: Borini is booked before the game restarts, presumably for over-celebrating in front of the home fans.

GOAL-MDC-icons19mins - SUNDERLAND GOAL (0-1): Fabio Borini, who scored the winner in the meeting at the Stadium of Light, steps up and smashes the ball past Tim Krul who went the right way but could get nowhere near.

PENALTY-MDC-icons18mins: It's a penalty to Sunderland. Jack Colback floats the ball out to Johnson, who finds Bardsley racing into the box and Anita dives in but brings the full-back down.

17mins: Sunderland win a free kick after Steven Taylor is adjudged to have fouled Alonso. The Black Cats work it short to Bardsley but the right-back, who has been in decent goalscoring form of late, blazes over.

15mins: From a short corner routine, Santon has space for another shot but this one is sent sailing well over the bar.

13mins: Davide Santon's shot from the dead ball goes over the wall but unfortunately straight into the gloves of Manone.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons12mins: Sammy Ameobi flicks the ball over a Sunderland defender and races towards the box before John O'Shea flicks out a hand to stop him. He's booked and United have a free kick.

9mins: Sunderland try to play the ball out from their goalkeeper, Vito Mannone, but Newcastle press them high up the pitch and Anita wins the ball from Alonso in a dangerous area only for the flag to go up against Sissoko as the Dutchman slides him in.

5mins: Phil Bardsley goes down under a Vurnon Anita challenge near the right-hand corner flag and from the resulting free kick, whipped in by Adam Johnson, Spanish full-back Marcos Alonso heads over the bar.

2mins: Cheick Tiote picks out the run of Mathieu Debuchy and the ball runs to Moussa Sissoko. The powerful midfielder plays the ball back into the feet of Debuchy who by now is inside the box. He gets it with his back to goal but turns and drives a low shot agonisingly wide of the far post. That was almost a dream start for United.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: St. James' Park was a sea of black and white as the teams emerged from the tunnel and there's a great atmosphere as Newcastle take the kick-off, attacking towards the Gallowgate end in this first half. They're wearing black and white while Sunderland are in their yellow and navy blue change kit.
