Mike Jones

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Mike Jones will referee Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League fixture against Manchester City at St. James' Park on Sunday (2.05pm kick-off).

It is the third time this season the Cheshire-based official has been in charge of a Magpies' match.

He took charge of September's Capital One Cup third round victory over Leeds United, before being the man in the middle of Newcastle's 1-1 home draw against Southampton last month.

On that afternoon on Tyneside, Jones booked three players including Cheick Tiote.

So far this term, the 45-year-old has been appointed to 18 games across the Premier League, Championship, League One, FA Cup and Capital One Cup, issuing 56 yellow cards, two reds and awarding two penalties.

Jones was promoted to the Football League list of referees in 1997 and went on to take charge of the League Two play-off final and FA Trophy in 2007, before moving into the Select Group which officiates in the top flight.

In May 2012, he was the fourth official for referee Phil Dowd at the FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Liverpool.

On Sunday at St. James' Park, Jones will be assisted by Stephen Child and Ron Ganfield, with Martin Atkinson the game's fourth official.
