West Brom v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The big moments from Newcastle's Barclays Premier League defeat at the Hawthorns in their first match of 2014

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

At the Hawthorns

West Bromwich Albion 1 (Berahino 87pen)
Newcastle United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: Williamson heads the ball down, Cabaye shoots on the half-volley but it's straight at Foster and as the goalkeeper kicks the ball out, Mason blows his whistle. It's not the way United wanted to start 2014 but the match turned on Debuchy's red card and a penalty converted by Berahino. Click here for a report.

90+3mins: Just as he did against Arsenal three days ago, Krul comes up for a late corner but he can't get a touch to Cabaye's left-wing delivery as the Baggies clear their lines.

90+1mins: Haidara fizzes in a low cross from the left but Remy can't quite control it and the ball runs into the arms of Foster.

90mins: Four minutes will be added on.

SUB-MDC-icons88mins: The Baggies make their final change as Nicholas Anelka is replaced by Zoltan Gera.

GOAL-MDC-icons87mins - WEST BROMWICH ALBION GOAL (1-0): Berahino steps up and although Krul goes the right way, he can't get near to the well-struck spot kick.

PENALTY-MDC-icons86mins: Vydra races onto Brunt's pass, takes the ball around Krul and then goes down - it's a penalty to West Brom but no card is shown to the United keeper.

82mins: What a miss from Ridgewell. The full-back arrived late as Brunt's reverse pass teed up Berahino to cross low but somehow the ex-Aston Villa man side-footed wide from around five yards out.

SUB-MDC-icons78mins: Sessegnon comes off for Matej Vydra, who scored plenty of goals during a loan spell with Watford last season.

SUB-MDC-icons76mins: Massadio Haidara replaces Ameobi, a move which sees Santon go to right-back and frees up Sissoko to bolster the midfield.

75mins: After a Newcastle attack breaks down, the home side counter and Sessegnon shoots but Krul holds his low strike well.

74mins: Sessegnon turns Yanga-Mbiwa and speeds towards goal but the French defender recovers well to put the youngster under pressure and a combination of that and the presence of Krul denies the Baggies man a goal.

70mins: Cabaye, who had just seen a strike easily fielded by Foster, goes down hurt after a sliding challenge from Amalfitano which looked late, but no free kick is given. Fortunately the stand-in skipper is able to continue.

69mins: Yanga-Mbiwa makes a great tackle on Berahino as the England under-21 forward goes to shoot but the ball runs towards Anelka, whose low effort is well kept out by Krul.

SUB-MDC-icons65mins: Fabricio Coloccini, who seemingly picked up an injury earlier in the half, is replaced by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. Cabaye is now wearing the armband and Sissoko is at right-back.

64mins: Berahino drives an effort wide as the Baggies look to make their extra man count.

Red-Card-MDC-icons62mins: Debuchy is sent off. The Frenchman lunged in on Claudio Yacob as he tried to win the ball and although he did exactly that, referee Mason saw it as a two-footed tackle and shows a straight red. It seems harsh but if you tackle like that, you're always taking a risk.

58mins: Ameobi pings the ball towards Remy on the left-hand corner of the box and he jinks inside before curling agonisingly wide of the far post.

54mins: A Cabaye free-kick is half-cleared and Cheick Tiote follows up with a half-volley from 22 yards which bounces right in front of Foster, who does well to hold on.

53mins: Sissoko drives past three players and then hangs up an inviting cross from the right which Ameobi is ready to head home before Gareth McAuley gets a crucial touch.

51mins: Ameobi holds the ball up well to allow Sissoko to dink the ball down the line for Debuchy, whose low cross is gathered by Foster.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Both sides make a change at the break. For Newcastle, Hatem Ben Arfa is on for Gouffran and you get the feeling that the Magpies number ten could enjoy himself here. Meanwhile the Baggies bring on Saido Berahino in place of Jones, who suffered that cut above his eye in the first half. Amalfitano is now playing at right-back as the home side take kick-off.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1min: The home side's dangerman, Amalfitano, delivers yet another cross from the right but it's just behind Sessegnon, who goes for an overhead kick but can't quite pull it off and Newcastle escape once more. Referee Lee Mason then blows for half-time. Click here for a report.

45mins: Fourth official Geoff Eltringham shows that there will be just one minute of stoppage time.

44mins: Brunt's cross from the left goes all the way through to Amalfitano at the far post and the Frenchman skips past Gouffran then cuts the ball back to Anelka, who scoops the ball over the bar from six yards out. That was probably the best chance of the aftenoon.

41mins: Shola Ameobi wins a free kick for Newcastle on the edge of the area after Amalfitano fouls the big striker - but Cabaye's shot hits the wall.

30mins: Chris Brunt should score for the Baggies; Amalfitano and Sessegnon work a clever one-two with the former able to deliver from the right-hand byline and the Northern Irish midfielder - who netted against the Magpies at St. James' Park - steals in but can only head wide from ten yards out.

29mins: A dangerous left-wing corner from Amalfitano is met by Jonas Olsson but his powerful header goes just wide.

27mins: Another Debuchy cross causes problems as Williamson heads the full-back's delivery back across goal for Cabaye, who can only stab wide.

26mins: Jones returns after a cut above his eye is cleaned up but just as he runs back on, Newcastle attack down the right and Mathieu Debuchy's cross is missed by Gouffran before the home side scramble the ball behind.

23mins: Loic Remy turns and shoots from 20 yards and his effort loops up off a Baggies defender allowing Yoan Gouffran to race onto it. Ben foster is off line line quickly to punch the ball away but in the process he cleans out his own defener, Billy Jones, who requires treatment for a head injury.

16mins: A brilliant touch from Mike Williamson denies Stephane Sessegnon a tap-in. Nicholas Anelka fed Liam Ridgewell on the left and the full-back drove in a magnificent low cross. Ex-Sunderland man Sessegnon was sliding in to meet it but the slightest of touches from Williamson diverts it away at the expense of a corner, which Krul claims confidently.

15mins: That man Amalfitano again finds space on the Baggies right but balloons over the bar from just outside the box.

12mins: Amalfitano shows good skill to speed past Santon and his cross-cum-shot threatens to catch out Krul, but the keeper backpedals quickly to gather the ball high above his head.

6mins: Yohan Cabaye floats a wonderful pass out to Davide Santon on the left and the Italian kills it first time before sending over a dangerous cross which almost falls for Moussa Sissoko inside the box. The home side clear, then mount an attack of their own and Morgan Amalfitano - brother of United's Romain - sends a low shot straight at Tim Krul.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: After a minute's applause in memory of former West Brom director, chairman and club president John Silk, who passed away yesterday at the age of 89, it is Newcastle - in their lucky yellow and blue change kit - who take kick-off on a wet afternoon at the Hawthorns.

West Bromwich Albion (4-2-3-1): Ben Foster; Billy Jones (Saido Berahino 46), Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Liam Ridgewell; Youssouf Mulumbu, Caludio Yacob; Morgan Amalfitano, Stephane Sessegnon (Matej Vydra 78), Chris Brunt (c); Nicolas Anelka (Zoltan Gera 88)
