Newcastle v Southampton: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

All the goals, chances and drama from Saturday's 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw with Southampton

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

At St. James' Park

Newcastle United 1 (Gouffran 28)
Southampton 1 (Rodriguez 66)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+6mins: Anita's corner is flicked on by Williamson and kept in by Cisse but before the Senegalese striker can send the ball back into the danger area, the final whistle blows on an entertaining and at times bad-tempered affair. Click here for the match report.

SUB-MDC-icons90+5mins: Rodriguez comes off for Sam Gallagher and it looks like the ex-Burnley striker's 66th minute goal will be enough to earn his side a point.

90+4mins: A Magpies corner is half cleared as far as Haidara, who takes a touch to set himself and crack in a shot which, fortunately for Gazzaniga, is straight down the keeper's throat.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons90+3mins: A poor challenge from Schneiderlin leaves Haidara in agony and Jones' decision to only book the Southampton man sparks ugly scenes between the two dugouts. Coaching staff from both benches square up before order is finally restored.

90+1mins: Debuchy makes a vital saving challenge to prevent Rodriguez from scoring a second after he beats the offside trap to run onto Davis' pass.

90mins: There will be six minutes of stoppage time, at least a couple of which will have been added on as the referee received treatment.

88mins: Sissoko bursts down the right and past two players before finding Ben Arfa, who takes a touch and sees his shot charged down. Perhaps he could have hit that first time. The ball loops into the arms of Gazzaniga, who goes down hurt under a challenge, and then as referee Jones comes over he too falls over after Sissoko accidentally catches him.

81mins: Tiote steams forward and ignores the run of Debuchy, deciding instead to shoot from 22 yards. His effort isn't far away but whistles wide.

79mins: Ben Arfa and Anita stand over a free kick near the left-hand corner flag and the former takes it, sending a low effort towards goal which Gazzaniga is happy to put behind for a corner. That's played short and Ben Arfa dribbles into the box but his dangerous cutback is cleared.

SUB-MDC-icons78mins: United's final change sees Massadio Haidara replace Davide Santon at left-back.

SUB-MDC-icons73mins: An awful kick from Gazzaniga from a routine back pass falls straight to Remy, who has only the keeper to beat from ten yards out but shoots wide when normally he would have buried it. What a chance. Newcastle bring on Hatem Ben Arfa for goalscorer Gouffran.

71mins: Santon slips and allows Davis to cut the ball back for Lambert whose shot is deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Rodriguez creeps into the box and has a great chance to score but his header is well saved by Krul.

70mins: A Magpies corner is cleared but Santon plays the ball back into the box, Debuchy heads towards Remy and when the ball comes back to the defender, his low strike is saved by Gazzaniga.

67mins: Debuchy shoots wide from distance as Newcastle go in search of a quick response.

GOAL-MDC-icons66mins - SOUTHAMPTON GOAL (1-1): The visitors break quickly after a Magpies free-kick is cleared and Davis slides the ball to Rodriguez, who finishes fantastically to level the scores. Tiote tried to break that up with a tactical foul but Mike Jones played a good advantage.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons65mins: Southampton's Jack Cork is the first player to be booked after an untidy challenge on Tiote.

64mins: Steven Davis sends a stunning volley crashing back off a post - that would have been one of the goals of the season had that gone in as he hit it from at least 25 yards out and Krul was beaten all ends up.

SUB-MDC-icons61mins: Papiss Cisse is on in place of Ameobi, who has put in another great shift for the Magpies this afternoon.

58mins: Sissoko crosses from the right and Remy takes a touch to work room for a shot but his strike is blocked by Calum Chambers. However Newcastle force a corner and Anita's floated delivery is met by a towering header from Ameobi; sadly for United, it's off target.

55mins: Krul takes a free kick, awarded for a foul by Schneiderlin on Remy, from inside his own half and Ameobi flicks it on, allowing Remy to fire in a low shot from the edge of the box which Gazzaniga falls to his left to hold.

52mins: Santon takes a throw short to Sissoko, who plays it back to the Italian. He then cuts inside and gets in a shot from the edge of the area but it's comfortably dealt with by Gazzaniga.

51mins: Rickie Lambert clips a nice ball towards Jay Rodriguez, who is arriving in the box at full speed, but the England man can't connect properly.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: There's a double change for Southampton at the break - Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin are on in place of Osvaldo and Ward-Prowse. Alan Pardew worked with both players during his time at Southampton and it's the Saints who get the second period underway.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: Mike Jones blows for half time and Newcastle lead through Yoan Gouffran's well-taken goal. Click here for the half time report. Today's attendance is 49,164 including 1,200 away supporters.

45mins: There will be just one minute of stoppage time, with Newcastle ending the half on the front foot.

41mins: Ameobi charges down a Jos Hoiveld clearance and then battles to hold the ball up before playing in Anita. He bamboozles a couple of defenders with some superb footwork in the box which had to be seen to be believed before firing in a low cross which sadly nobody was able to take advantage of. What a shame that did not lead to a goal, for it perfectly demonstrated in equal measure the hard work and talent which Alan Pardew's Magpies now possess.

36mins: Superb link-up sees Remy receive the ball from Moussa Sissoko then play a lovely reverse pass back into the path of his compatriot, who is denied by Gazzaniga from a narrow angle.

35mins: Anita wins a free-kick in a decent position after a clever nutmeg and Davide Santon steps up to take it, but his right-footed strike flies over the bar.

33mins: Another dead ball causes problems for the Saints as Gazzaniga comes from his line but then backtracks as Ameobi gets his head to the ball but his looping header is eventually saved by the goalkeeper.

GOAL-MDC-icons28mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (1-0): Until recently, scoring from set-pieces was a problem for Newcastle but that's changed in recent weeks and the Magpies are in front from another dead ball situation. Debuchy pumped the ball into the box, Mike Williamson nodded the ball back across goal and Gouffran stole in, coolly took the ball around Gazzaniga and slotted into the empty Gallowgate net. It's the fourth home match in a row that the ex-Bordeaux man has scored.

16mins: Barclays Player of the Month Krul is tested for the first time as Pablo Osvaldo rolls the ball towards James Ward-Prowse, whose curling effort is easily gathered by the Newcastle number one.

12mins: Newcastle almost take the lead as Debuchy clips the ball down the line and Ameobi scuffs a cross into the box. It looks comfortable for Gazzaniga but Yoan Gouffran refuses to give up on it and nips in ahead of the keeper before pulling the ball back towards Loic Remy on the penalty spot. He seems a certain scorer but Dejan Lovren is there to stop the ball on the line before Anita's follow-up is deflected wide.

5mins: Shola Ameobi wins what is a third corner already for his team and this time, Anita aims the ball towards Mathieu Debuchy on the edge of the box. The Frenchman sends a powerful volley narrowly wide - it was fine technique from the full-back but alas he just couldn't steer it on target.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Just before kick-off, Tim Krul was presented with his Barclays Player of the Month award but now he's taken his position in the Leazes goal as Southampton, in all red with white piping, get the game started. Newcastle are seeking a fourth successive home victory and force a corner inside the opening minute, but Vurnon Anita's delivery is claimed by Paulo Gazzaniga.
