Newcastle v West Brom: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The goals, the chances, the bookings and the penalty appeals from Newcastle's fourth straight Barclays Premier League victory

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Newcastle United 2 (Gouffran 36, Sissoko 57)
West Bromwich Albion 1 (Brunt 53)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: Newcastle United have soared to fifth in the Barclays Premier League with a fourth straight win. Like last week's success over Norwich, the last few minutes were nervy but United were good value for the three points. Click here for the match report.

SUB-MDC-icons90+3mins: Sissoko breaks and cuts the ball back for Cabaye, whose shot deflects wide. He thinks it was handball by McAuley but either way, United have a corner. Now on comes Papiss Cisse in place of Sissoko, who looks set to be the matchwinner.

90+2mins: Williamson makes a superb diving header as he defends a dangerous cross right wing cross while facing towards his own goal. He could so easily have got that wrong.

90mins: Long wins a free kick on the right and although there's too much on Jones' initial delivery, Gareth McAuley retrieves it and dinks the ball in for Anichebe to nod just wide. There will be four minutes of stoppage time.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons89mins: Sissoko pokes the ball through to Cabaye, whose run is unfairly halted by Mulumbu. He is booked.

SUB-MDC-icons88mins: Here's West Brom's third and final change - Zoltan Gera comes on for Amalfitano.

SUB-MDC-icons84mins: Vurnon Anita comes on for Remy as Alan Pardew adds another body to the midfield area for the final few minutes.

81mins: Dowd awards West Brom a free kick in a dangerous area as Mulumbu goes down under Cabaye's challenge but Berahino's shot is blocked by the wall, who stood up tall.

SUB-MDC-icons77mins: Steve Clarke makes a double substitution - Brunt is replaced by Saido Berahino and Sessegnon comes off for Victor Anichebe, the ex-Everton forward.

75mins: Ameobi does well on the left and hits a cross-cum-shot which Myhill claims, then rolls out to a team-mate but Debuchy intercepts and cracks a shot which the keeper is relieved to hold.

74mins: Olsson's raking pass picks out the run of Brunt but this time his shot is horribly off target.

73mins: Newcastle appeal for a penalty as Cabaye's peach of a cross from the right bounces up and appears to strike Billy Jones' arm but Dowd isn't interested.

63mins: Debuchy pumps a free kick into the box and Ameobi chests it into the path of Remy, whose powerful volley flies a couple of feet over the bar.

59mins: The Baggies seek an immediate response through Mulumbu but his low shot from the edge of the box is wide.

GOAL-MDC-icons57mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (2-1): The only thing rattling now is the back of Boaz Myhill's net. Ameobi and Remy combine neatly to tee up Sissoko to unleash an absolute stonker from 22 yards into the top corner. What a goal and what a time to score it - just as the Baggies were getting on top.

56mins: Amalfitano's corner is headed wide by Olsson, who got a firm connection but no real direction. The visitors' tails are up and for the first time today, Newcastle look rattled.

GOAL-MDC-icons53mins - WEST BROMWICH ALBION GOAL (1-1): That man Brunt smashes home a fine equaliser. The ball was crossed in from the right and came all the way to the Northern Irishman, who took a touch and hammered it into the roof of the net.

51mins: Remy stands up Olsson and shoots, but the defender recovers well to get a foot to the ball and take the pace off the strike to allow Myhill to gather.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons50mins: Brunt, already on a booking, wipes out Cabaye just inside the Baggies half and he might consider himself a little fortunate not to be shown a second yellow. It was mistimed rather than malicious and maybe that's what saved him.

49mins: Ameobi threads the ball through to Remy, who tries to take the ball around Myhill but is denied by the Wales international keeper.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Newcastle get the second half underway, kicking towards the Gallowgate end. Today's attendance is 49,298 including 1,700 away fans.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+4mins: A Brunt free kick, given for a foul by Cabaye on Long, goes well wide meaning that United lead at the break through Yoan Gouffran's 36th minute header - and they deserve nothing less. It's not been a great game but the Magpies have asked most of the questions so far. Click here for the first half report.

45+3mins: Cabaye sends the ball in from the right and Remy gets his head to it but it loops over the bar.

45+2mins: Remy rolls Jonas Olsson and looks set to race through on goal but then seems to be clipped by the defender. Alan Pardew is furious because Olsson was the last man and had Dowd given United the free kick, he would surely have had to send the Swede off.

45mins: There will be four minutes of stoppage time.

44mins: Remy turns and runs, then shoots from range but it's a weak, low shot which trickles into the arms of Myhill.

GOAL-MDC-icons36mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (1-0): The resulting corner is taken by Cabaye and Myhill can only punch it up into the air where Yoan Gouffran is waiting to head into the empty net. West Brom appeal for a foul on their goalkeeper but Dowd points to the centre circle and having not scored from a flag kick for more than two years, United have now done so in successive matches!

35mins: Santon picks the pocket of Morgan Amalfitano - brother of Newcastle's Romain - and shoots from 30 yards with Mulumbu deflecting his strike behind for a corner.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons32mins: Dowd now books Tiote for a fractionally late tackle on Youssuf Mulumbu. The referee points to an earlier foul by the Ivorian and it seems that it's a combination of the two tackles which has led to his name being taken.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons27mins: Baggies skipper Brunt becomes the first player shown a yellow by Phil Dowd. He fouled Sissoko some time ago but play continued and the referee brought it back to flash the card.

25mins: Sissoko, who looks very much in the mood today, leaves three players trailing in his wake before sliding the ball to Ameobi but his shot from 18 yards lacks power and is easy for Myhill to pick up.

22mins: Another Debuchy delivery is half-cleared and Cabaye again chances his arm from distance but for the second time today, he is off target.

19mins: Moussa Sissoko bulldozes his way down the right and plays the ball back to Debuchy, whose fantastic cross is met by the head of Loic Remy but somehow blocked by Billy Jones, who threw himself in front of the ball. That was almost the opener.

18mins: Darlington-born Scotland international James Morrison cushions the ball into the path of Brunt, who goes for a 25-yard volley but sends it well off target.

14mins: Shola Ameobi feeds Yohan Cabaye and he tries his luck from a similar distance to his goal against Liverpool last month but this time the ball bounces wide of Boaz Myhill's post.

11mins: A chant of 'there's only one Gary Speed' echoes around the stadium as the Newcastle fans remember the popular midfielder who died just over two years ago. It continues for the full minute with accompanying cries of 'Speedo, Speedo'.

3mins: Former Sunderland man Stephane Sessegnon wins a free kick as he goes down under Fabricio Coloccini's challenge and Chris Brunt's free kick is expertly tipped around the post by Krul. From the resulting left-wing corner, the ball is headed high into the air and Krul can't claim, allowing Sessegnon to get in a shot on the turn which Mathieu Debuchy blocks bravely.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Newcastle would climb from eighth to fifth if they can record a fourth successive Barclays Premier League win this afternoon and they'll kick towards the Leazes end in this first half with West Bromwich Albion, in their all-red kit with white trim, taking kick-off.
