Newcastle United have been reinstated into this year's Barclays Under-21 Premier League Cup after Birmingham City withdrew from the competition having inadvertently fielded an ineligible player.

The Blues ran out 2-1 winners when the two sides met at St. Andrew's on Tuesday afternoon but it came to light that on-loan striker Aaron Mclean had represented parent club Hull City against Derby County in round two.

Once the oversight was discovered, the Premier League was immediately informed and, in order to protect the integrity of the competition, Birmingham have opted to withdraw from the competition with immediate effect.

As a result, Newcastle will now host Leicester City in the last 16 on a date to be confirmed.

Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley's second-string host Chelsea in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League at St. James' Park on Monday, with a 1pm kick-off.
