James Tavernier has joined Rotherham United on loan until January 2nd.
The 22-year-old defender, who can play at right-back or in the centre of the back line, saw a spell with Shrewsbury at the beginning of the campaign cut short by injury and has yet to play for Newcastle this term.
He has made a total of nine first-team appearances for the Magpies, including two in the Barclays Premier League, and captained the under-21s in their defeat at Birmingham on Tuesday.
As well as Shrewsbury, Tavernier has also spent time on loan with Gateshead, Carlisle, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons.
Thursday is the deadline for Football League clubs to make emergency loan signings.
Millers boss Steve Evans told his club's official website: "This is a young man who I have watched develop over the last couple of years, and I have taken the time not only to watch him in the first-team at Newcastle United, but also when he has appeared on loan at other clubs.
"It goes without doubt that I must also acknowledge and thank Alan Pardew at Newcastle United, and obviously his assistant Steve Stone who has helped myself persuade the young man to join us in preference to a number of other alternatives he had."
