Shola's Volley Good Show For Super Eagles

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle's Shola Ameobi scored his first senior international goal with a sublime volley as Nigeria drew with Italy on Monday night

At the age of 32, Shola Ameobi scored his first senior international goal on Monday night as Nigeria took on Italy at Fulham's Craven Cottage.

The Zaria-born striker had already set up a goal for Bright Dike in his fifth cap for the Super Eagles with a fine cross in the warm-up game.

And five minutes later, he went one better with a deft volley at the near post to put his side 2-1 up before celebrating in his usual effortlessly cool style.

He was substituted after 65 minutes as the match finished 2-2 but, with Nigeria having booked their place in next summer's World Cup, Ameobi will hope that his display has edged him closer to a seat on the plane for Brazil.

On Tuesday night, his Newcastle team-mates Mathieu Debuchy, Yohan Cabaye, Loic Remy and Moussa Sissoko will be trying to salvage their own World Cup campaign.

France take on Ukraine in Paris, but trail 2-0 from the first leg.
