Newcastle v Chelsea: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

A minute-by-minute rundown of all the action and incidents from a superb victory over Chelsea at St. James' Park

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Newcastle United 2 (Gouffran 68, Remy 89)
Chelsea 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+5mins: It's finished here at St. James' Park and Newcastle have ended Chelsea's six-game winning run with a superb second-half display. Before the game, Alan Pardew said he would need at least outstanding individual performances to get three points today - he has had 11. From back to front, every player was on top of their game. Click here for the match report.

90+2mins: More brave defending from United as Yanga-Mbiwa and Santon block a shot from Eto'o, who then sends his second attempt over the bar.

90mins: There will be five minutes of stoppage time but surely Newcastle can see this through now.

GOAL-MDC-icons89mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-0): Game, set and match - what a second goal from Newcastle. Obertan and Anita look happy to kill time by the corner flag until Anita suddenly checks into the box and cuts the ball back for Remy, who makes no mistake from ten yards. St. James' Park is rocking.

86mins: Ramires finds Hazard at the far post and the Belgian takes a touch before shooting - but his strike flashes past the far post.

SUB-MDC-icons85mins: Pardew makes his final change, with the pacy Gabriel Obertan on for his first league appearance of the season in place of goalscorer Gouffran. Then as United attack, Sissoko delivers a glorious cross from the right and it requires a vital defensive header from Luiz to prevent Remy from making it 2-0.

80mins: Unbelievable defending from Newcastle United. They want this so much. Willian's thunderbolt moves in the air but is still parried by Krul then, as the ball falls to the clinical Eto'o, Debuchy and Yanga-Mbiwa charge in to make a fantastic block.

79mins: Newcastle break quickly once again and Cisse plays in Remy, but the striker's shot from the edge of the area is weak and easily dealt with by Cech.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons77mins: Ramires fouls Remy as he embarks on a dangerous run, then refuses to come towards Mason for a talking to - so Mason instead marches towards the midfielder and books him. Chelsea look rather rattled.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons75mins: David Luiz is booked for a foul on Vurnon Anita. The Dutchman had nicked the ball away from him and Lee Mason played a good advantage, but brought play back to show the yellow card.

73mins: If Terry's block at the other end a few seconds earlier was important, one from Yanga-Mbiwa just now could be even more important. Ivanovic had cut the ball back to Eto'o eight yards from goal but the Frenchman threw himself in the way to deflect the ball behind. Magnificent defending.

72mins: From being solid and organised in the first half, Newcastle are now playing slick, inventive football. Sissoko does brilliantly on the left before finding Remy, who dribbles past a couple of men and sees Terry make a trademark last-ditch tackle to block his shot.

SUB-MDC-icons70mins: Jose Mourinho responds by introducing German international Andre Schurrle in place of Lampard.

GOAL-MDC-icons68mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (1-0): It's been coming and Newcastle get the goal they deserve. Cabaye delivers a beautiful arcing free-kick and Gouffran dives full-length to head past Cech at the Gallowgate end. He's mobbed by his team-mates and United are ahead.

65mins: The Newcastle pressure continues: Remy finds Gouffran on the left and he cuts in and shoots, with Cech pleased to tip his stinging low drive behind.

SUB-MDC-icons63mins: A double substitution for Chelsea and one change for Newcastle: Samuel Eto'o and Willian are on in place of Fernando Torres and Juan Mata for the Blues while Papiss Cisse replaces Shola Ameobi for United.

61mins: The crowd are loving this right now - first Sissoko heads across goal for Remy, whose shot is too close to Cech, then Remy shoots from distance but is off target.

60mins: Suddenly United are first to every ball and after a great challenge from Debuchy, the right-back then finds Sissoko galloping into the box. He cuts in and shoots across goal but it goes just the wrong side of the post.

59mins: The composed Yanga-Mbiwa finds Shola Ameobi, who bursts through three challenges before trying to find Remy. His ball is but out but it only goes as far as Cabaye, who shoots wide.

SUB-MDC-icons53mins: Here comes the first change of the afternoon and it's the impressive Tiote who comes off for Vurnon Anita. Cabaye takes the armband.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: United get the second half underway, with no changes made by either manager. Today's attendance is 51,674 and the Magpies are now attacking towards the Gallowgate end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1min: After Debuchy sends a long-range shot well over the bar, Mason blows for half-time and it's 0-0 at the break. There have been few chances at either end and while Chelsea have had more of the ball and more of the openings, Alan Pardew will be pleased with the way his side have stuck to their task so far.

45mins: Fourth official Robert Madley holds up his board to show one minute of stoppage time.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons42mins: After being knocked off the ball by Ivanovic, Sissoko tries to win it back but is late as he slides in and deservedly picks up the first yellow card of the afternoon.

38mins: Remy releases Sissoko on the left and the Frenchman, who scored twice in this fixture last season, jinks into the box before seeing his low shot saved by Cech at his near post.

37mins: Lampard's corner is powered towards goal by the head of Terry but Davide Santon is there to heroically block on the line. That's the second time Chelsea's captain has threatened from flag kicks.

30mins: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa plays the ball up to Loic Remy, who lays it off first-time with a neat touch to Yohan Cabaye. The midfielder hits it low and hard but Cech is well-positioned and drops to his left to hold on.

23mins: A superb ball out to Hazard on the left allows the Belgian to link up with Mata before Ashley Cole joins in and fizzes a low shot from a tight angle straight into the arms of Krul. Newcastle are struggling to get out of their own half at the moment, but have defended well.

21mins: Referee Lee Mason gives Chelsea a free-kick after a foul on the Blues left by Moussa Sissoko and Frank Lampard goes for goal from nearly 30 yards, but his effort drifts well over.

13mins: Juan Mata's deep corner from the right is met by John Terry's whose header is tipped onto the bar by Tim Krul. The ball comes back out to Fernando Torres who goes for an overhead kick but his looping effort is expertly pushed over the top by United's keeper.

11mins: A long ball into the right-hand channel is nodded powerfully on by Mathieu Debuchy and for a split second it looks as through the right-back's header may catch out Petr Cech but in the end it rolls harmlessly wide.

8mins: Shola Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran combine well as the Frenchman goes for goal from 22 yards but Branislav Ivanovic blocks his shot.

4mins: Eden Hazard goes down on the edge of the box as Mike Williamson sticks out a leg but David Luiz's dipping free-kick is off target.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: After a minute's silence ahead of next weekend's Remembrance Sunday, Chelsea take kick-off at St. James' Park in today's early kick-off in the Barclays Premier League. The Blues, wearing their traditional colours, would go top with three points but United will be looking to repeat last season's 3-2 victory in this fixture.
