Newcastle United 0
Manchester City 2 (Negredo 99, Dzeko 105)
After extra time
EXTRA TIME UPDATES
120mins: The game is finally over and alas, so is Newcastle's Capital One Cup run. They played well against a strong Manchester City side, shading the 90 minutes and then having a couple of great chances in extra time, but some clinical finishing from multi-million pound strikers Negredo and Dzeko proved the difference. Click here for the match report.
118mins: Cabaye is booked for dissent as Newcastle begin to let their disappointment show.
117mins: Ben Arfa draws Zabaleta in then skips past him on the left, but rather than crossing he goes for goal and his shot ends up going for a Man City throw in.
116mins: Silva jinks into the box and curls just wide from the 18-yard line. His arrival has made a difference to City but a third goal would have been extremely harsh.
115mins: Debuchy is booked for a frustrated tackle on Negredo. He's played well tonight and doesn't deserve to be on the losing side.
112mins: A Ben Arfa shot is heroically cleared off the line by Joleon Lescott. The defender had headed Sissoko's right-wing cross into the path of the Newcastle number ten but then raced back to cover his post and stop the Frenchman's shot from finding the net.
110mins: Dzeko backheels the ball to Milner and his drive is deflected just wide for a City corner. It must only have been the slightest of touches from a black and white shirt but it was probably the difference between that going wide or nestling in the bottom corner.
106mins: Newcastle take kick-off, attacking towards the Gallowgate, but it will take something truly special now for the Magpies to stay in the Capital One Cup.
105mins - MANCHESTER CITY GOAL (0-2): Dzeko set up the first and has now scored the second. Milner supplied the slide-rule pass and the striker took the ball around Krul and tapped into the empty net. There will be one minute of added time at the end of the first half of extra time.
99mins - MANCHESTER CITY GOAL (0-1): Negredo sidefoots home from Dzeko's cross from the byline to put the visitors 1-0 up. In truth, Newcastle have only themselves to blame for failing to clear their lines on at least two occasions. First Anita lost out to Zabaleta, allowing Navas to get a cross in, and when Sissoko cleared that the ball came straight back down the United left. From there, Dzeko centred and Negredo could not miss.
93mins: What a chance for Newcastle. Cisse beats the offside trap to go one-on-one with Pantilimon but the big keeper spreads himself to keep out the Senegalese striker's shot from eight yards. Seconds later, Cisse does get the ball in the net but this time the flag is up.
91mins: Tiote wins the toss, meaning City have the kick-off but Newcastle will attack towards the Gallowgate end in the second half. There's a huge roar from all around the ground as extra time gets underway.
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90+4mins: Extra time will be required to seperate Newcastle and Manchester City. It's finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and should there be no goals over the next half an hour, the match would go to a penalty shoot-out.
90+3mins: Silva is booked - presumably for a show of dissent - as Newcastle are awarded a free kick inside their own half.
90+2mins: "Sing your hearts out for the lads," implore the supporters in the Strawberry Corner. They clearly believe that an extra push from the stands could be the difference with this match totally in the balance.
90mins: There will be four minutes of stoppage time.
89mins: Cabaye clips in a lovely ball from the left and Gouffran nods wide from six yards, but the flag was up against him anyway and extra time now beckons.
88mins: Krul makes a fantastic save to keep out Negredo's header and potentially keep Newcastle in the Capital One Cup. The striker sent the ball back across goal after a left-wing cross but Krul somehow threw up a hand to tip it away and Debuchy completed the clearance.
84mins: Yanga-Mbiwa floats the ball towards Cisse on the left and the striker hits it first time from an improbable angle, forcing Pantilimon into a decent save.
83mins: Micah Richards, who went down injured and needed treatment a few seconds earlier, comes off to be replaced by Pablo Zabaleta. That means both managers have used all of their substitutes.
81mins: Alan Pardew brings on Hatem Ben Arfa in place of Dummett. The left-back was holding his hamstring as he came off but it could be that the Magpies boss is simply going for broke in an attempt to book a place in the quarter-finals.
78mins: Dzeko and Negredo link up beautifully, with the former laying the ball into the path of his team-mate who advances into the box, waits for Krul to commit himself and tries to dink the ball over him only for the ball to hit the side-netting. It seemed as though the frontman had simply missed the target but a corner is given which Newcastle defend gallantly.
75mins: Navas gets a cross in from the right and it's met by Dzeko, but he can only nod wide at the near post.
73mins: Richards goes on another direct run and after shrugging off Gouffran, is halted by Tiote. However, the big defender lands on top of the Ivorian midfielder's leg and it looks as though the Newcastle man is hurt. However, amazingly Tiote gets to his feet and looks set to continue despite taking the full force of the muscular right-back's weight.
70mins: The unselfish Gouffran works the ball to Cabaye, who shoots from 25 yards but hasn't found his range just yet - it zips well wide of goal.
69mins: Sissoko is first to the ball as Krul's long kick downfield isn't dealt with by City but his shot takes a deflection, allowing Pantilimon to save easily.
67mins: Now Newcastle make a change: Yohan Cabaye is on for Ameobi, who has worked tirelessly and held the ball up well. It looks as though Cabaye will play in a number ten role, behind main striker Cisse.
65mins: David Silva replaces Rodwell, who has been quiet this evening.
63mins: Navas' pace turns a hopeful ball down the right-hand channel into a goalscoring chance. The Spaniard streaked onto it and tempted Krul to race from his goal before poking the ball to Milner. The net was unguarded as Milner went for goal from the edge of the box but it flew just over.
60mins: Tiote, well and truly back to his best in recent weeks, wins possession in midfield before playing the ball to Gouffran. In turn, the Frenchman finds Sissoko whose shot veers away from goal.
59mins: Navas wins a corner after some good defending from Dummett and his corner is headed away by Tiote. However City recycle the ball and Jack Rodwell tries his luck, but can't get his shot on target.
55mins: After United half-clear a corner from the right, Negredo keeps the ball in play and feeds Milner on the left. His cross is met by the head of Richards but it drops over the bar.
51mins: Cisse finds Ameobi in a central position and he rolls the ball to Anita, whose low shot from 22 yards is too close to Pantilimon.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45+2mins: Neil Swarbrick blows for half time and it's 0-0 but Newcastle have been the better team and are loudly applauded as they make their way back down the tunnel. Click here for the half time report.
45+1mins: Pantilimon flaps at an Anita corner and Ameobi looks set to force the ball home but just miskicks as he goes for goal. Then Tiote is booked for a foul on Negredo as City clear their lines.
45mins: The bustling Richards picks up the ball on the halfway line before brushing off a couple of challenges as he races towards goal. Fortunately for United, he scuffs his low shot wide. There will be two minutes of stoppage time.
43mins: Edin Dzeko stands up a decent cross from the right and aims it towards Negredo at the far post, but with Debuchy - who has been outstanding so far - closing him down at a rate of knots the striker can only volley the ball high into the Leazes end.
38mins: Javi Garcia is booked for an ugly tackle on Anita, who had nicked the ball away from Micah Richards after great work from Gouffran to dispossess the England full-back on the left touchline. The Holland international takes the resulting free kick and Ameobi just fails to connect at the far post.
34mins: More positive play from the Magpies. Debuchy takes a quick throw on the right to Cisse, who whips over a deep cross which Gouffran heads back across goal. Steaming into the box is Anita, but the Dutchman places the ball wide from 12 yards. Had that fallen to one of United's strikers, they would have expected to bury that but sadly the midfielder could not add to his solitary goal in black and white.
32mins: Ameobi has a goal ruled out for offside. Anita's right-wing free-kick was met by the head of Cisse and the ball rebounded off a blue shirt back to the striker, who lashed the ball across goal. That was going wide until Ameobi stole in to prod the ball over the line - but it won't stand.
30mins: Pantilimon does well to turn an Ameobi snapshot around the post after good pressure from the Magpies. The striker was involved along with Vurnon Anita, and Gouffran as Sissoko saw an initial effort blocked before Ameobi nicked the ball away from a defender and send an acrobatic effort sneaking towards the bottom corner only for the goalkeeper to use every inch of his giant frame to get a touch to it.
25mins: Gouffran loses out too easily in midfield to allow City to break but the Frenchman then races back at top speed to put Milner under so much pressure than he spoons his left-wing cross out for a goal kick. Great determination from the ex-Bordeaux striker.
17mins: Cheick Tiote makes a superb block to keep out a goalbound strike from James Milner after Jack Rodwell had poked the ball towards the former Magpies man.
11mins: Newcastle win a free-kick 25 yards from goal and Massadio Haidara, making his first appearance of the season, steps up to take it. His powerful shot cannons back off the wall before his follow-up drifts narrowly wide.
10mins: An early enforced change for City as Jovetic comes off with what looks like a slight pull and Alvaro Negredo comes on in his place.
8mins: From Krul's long kick, Shola Ameobi flicks the ball on and Papiss Cisse is onto the ball in a flash. He goes to loft the ball over Costel Pantilimon and the goalkeeper can only stand and watch as it drops just the wrong side of the post.
4min: Excellent approach play from the visitors ends in Stevan Jovetic forcing a great save from Tim Krul but the flag was up against the forward as he took his shot. It must have been a close call.
1min: A place in the quarter-final draw for the Capital One Cup - made straight after tonight's game - is at stake for the winner and while both managers have made changes, there are still a whole host of international players on the pitch at St. James' Park as Newcastle take kick-off, kicking towards the Gallowgate end. United are in black and white while City are wearing their sky blue shirts white shorts and white socks.
