Mathieu Debuchy told nufc.co.uk his first United goal meant nothing as they lost the Tyne-Wear derby

Mathieu Debuchy's first goal in the famous black and white stripes was no consolation as Newcastle United suffered a 2-1 Tyne-Wear derby defeat at Sunderland on Sunday.
The French full-back netted in the 58th minute at the Stadium of Light, cancelling out Steven Fletcher's headed opener as he tucked home a Hatem Ben Arfa cross-cum-shot at the far post.
But Fabio Borini's stunner won it for the hosts with time running out, as the Black Cats recorded their first win of the Barclays Premier League season.
And for Debuchy, a maiden Newcastle strike since his arrival from Lille in January meant absolutely nothing at the end of a disappointing afternoon on Wearside.
"It was my first goal but I'm not happy because we lost the game," the 28-year-old told nufc.co.uk.
"I would prefer to not score and win the game.
"Nobody is happy today because we lost this game (the Tyne-Wear derby) again.
"The first half was no good. We lost the ball and did not keep it enough. That made things difficult for us as a team.
"In the second half it was better but we didn't win the game and that was all that mattered.
"Three points was there for the team. It was important for the Club, the fans, the team and for the championship but we didn't do it."
Debuchy had a final word of apology for the 2,800 Newcastle supporters who roared their side on from start to finish at the Stadium of Light.
"I'm so sorry," he said.
"They were fantastic today and we didn't win the game for them. I'm very sorry."
