Newcastle v Liverpool: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

A minute by minute rundown of an all-action game at St. James' Park which had four goals, a penalty, a red card and drama throughout

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Newcastle United 2 (Cabaye 23, Dummett 57)
Liverpool 2 (Gerrard pen 42, Sturridge 72)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

90+4mins: Krul makes a superb save from Suarez's free-kick with the last kick of the match and despite playing with ten men for more than half the game, Newcastle have gained a superb point against Liverpool. The Magpies led twice, through Cabaye and Dummett, but will be happy with the draw after Yanga-Mbiwa was dismissed just before the break as he conceded a penalty which was converted by Gerrard. Sturridge's goal denied United victory but they were cheered off after a dogged display in a hugely entertaining game.

90+3mins: Liverpool work the ball from left to right before Alberto finally has a shot, but it's way off target.

90mins: Sturridge races down the right and dinks the ball beyond Krul, but Debuchy goes full length to head away. There will be four minutes of added time.

87mins: Newcastle break quickly from a Liverpool attack and Remy bursts through with just one defender blocking his route to goal. Alas, Cissokho makes a great tackle to deny the Frenchman a clear run on goal.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons86mins: Yet another yellow card - this one goes to Debuchy for a foul.

85mins: A touch of class from Gerrard sees him pick out the run of Sturridge with a 40 yard pass and the striker controls but drags his effort wide of Krul's far post, much to the relief of most of the spectators.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons84mins: Sturridge becomes the latest player cautioned for a late challenge on Gouffran, who had nicked the ball away from him.

83mins: An attacking change from the visitors - Raheem Sterling is on in place of Glen Johnson.

SUB-MDC-icons78mins: After another decent Liverpool chance flashes across goal as Sturridge threatens once more, Cabaye and Ben Arfa are replaced by Vurnon Anita and Sammy Ameobi.

75mins: Now Suarez fires over after good play on the right from Cissokho. Suddenly the Reds' tails are up - can United hold out or even go in front for a third time?

74mins: Sturridge almost forces in a second as he goes for Alberto's low cross but just can't reach it.

GOAL-MDC-icons72mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (2-2): They've barely threatened in this second half but Liverpool are level again. Suarez gets down the right and crosses for his strike partner to bundle home.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons71mins: Kolo Toure is yellow carded for illegally halting the run of Remy on the halfway line.

70mins: Tiote, who has been immense, robs Moses before having a shot from 22 yards. He drags it wide but it was still great play from the Ivorian.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons68mins: Gouffran is harshly booked for a slightly late tackle on Aly Cissokho.

SUB-MDC-icons63mins: Ex-Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson half-volleys over as the Reds make their first change - Sakho is replaced by Luis Alberto.

58mins: Johnson cuts in from the right but his shot flies into the Leazes end, with the Newcastle fans in full voice and full of pride in their team.

GOAL-MDC-icons57mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): On a day when Steven Gerrard has scored his 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool, Geordie boy Paul Dummett has his first for Newcastle. The ex-Kenton School pupil stole in at the far post to slot past Mignolet from Cabaye's free-kick. He races to the Strawberry Corner to celebrate - what a moment for the youngster and for Newcastle, who are now back in front with only ten men.

55mins: Moses shoots high over the bar from distance as Newcastle work hard to restrict the space for the ex-Wigan winger.

50mins: Gerrard - already on a yellow card, remember - body checks Remy just inside the United half. Normally one would expect to see that result in a booking but despite the protestations of the home crowd Marriner lets him off. He may consider himself slightly fortunate.

48mins: Glen Johnson shoots from 20 yards and his effort bounced awkwardly in front of Krul, who does well to push it behind for a corner kick.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Newcastle begin the second half kicking towards the Gallowgate end. Today's attendance is 51,703 including 3,235 Liverpool supporters.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: An eventful half is brought to a close by Marriner, who is booed off for his decision to award a penalty to Liverpool and send off Yanga-Mbiwa. Newcastle took the lead through Cabaye and were on top when Suarez won a spot-kick which Gerrard converted. It's still anybody's game but with their extra man, the Reds will now be favourites despite looking second best until the red card. Click here for the half time report.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons45+1mins: Now Gerrard is booked for a tug on Cabaye, to ironic cheers from the home fans.

SUB-MDC-icons45mins: Gerrard strikes over with a snapshot after the ball bounced around on the outside of the box, then Alan Pardew decides to bring on defender Paul Dummett for midfielder Sissoko. There will be two minutes of stoppage time.

GOAL-MDC-icons42mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (1-1): He had to wait a while to take it, but England captain Gerrard strokes home from 12 yards. Krul went the right way but couldn't reach the powerfully-struck penalty.

PENALTY-MDC-iconsRed-Card-MDC-icons40mins: Disaster for Newcastle as they concede a penalty and are reduced to ten men. From looking in control, they're suddenly looking at a very different game. Suarez races in on goal and then goes down under Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa's challenge. It looks soft but, with the Frenchman the last defender, Andre Marriner not only points to the spot but also sends the Magpies man off.

39mins: Sturridge slips the ball through to Suarez who tries to sidefoot across goal and into the far corner but sees Tim Krul dive to parry the ball and then gather at the second attempt.

37mins: What a hit from Moussa Sissoko - the Frenchman strikes a howitzer from 22 yards and Mignolet does well to not only keep it out but push it far enough away from danger to deny Newcastle a second chance from the rebound.

36mins: Almost a second for Cabaye as he again has a go from distance and sees his dipping effort drop just wide. Tiote and Cabaye have been particularly impressive in the engine room for United and at the moment the Magpies are edging the midfield battle.

34mins: In terms of chances, there's been little to report for the last ten minutes but this is a really exciting game. Both sides are attacking each other at every opportunity but also working hard defensively. Any neutrals watching at home will be really enjoying this one.

25mins: Another Liverpool corner causes problems as the Merseysiders go in search of an equaliser. Suarez clips the ball back to Mamadou Sissoko but his header lacked any real direction.

GOAL-MDC-icons23mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Liverpool have just had a spell of pressure but it's Newcastle who take the lead midway through the half and it's Yohan Cabaye with his second goal of the season. Nothing much looks on as he drives towards the defence but suddenly he lets fly with a 25-yard strike across goal. It takes Mignolet by surprise and skids into the bottom corner. A great strike.

22mins: The roles are reversed as Suarez's deep corner is headed back across goal by Gerrard and Martin Skrtel nods over the bar. For all of the visitors' attacking flair, it's from set-pieces that they look the most dangerous at the moment.

21mins: A right-wing corner from Steven Gerrard is met by the head of Luis Suarez - one of the smaller players in the box - and the South American's effort looks to be looping in but Davide Santon makes an instinctive block on the line. Good defending from the Italian - that was the closest either team has come to a goal.

18mins: After a superb challenge in the centre of the park by stand-in skipper Cheick Tiote to dispossess Moses, Loic Remy gets the ball and lets fly from almost 35 yards. Alas it's a poor effort from the in-form striker and it dribbles well wide.

12mins: Victor Moses finds Daniel Sturridge as the striker makes a run in the right-hand channel and gets a shot away, but his strike is easily dealt with by Tim Krul.

6mins: Mathieu Debuchy, sent off in this fixture last season, lines up a shot from 25 yards out but the right-back's powerful low drive is held down to his right by former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Liverpool, in their all red kits, get the game underway here at St. James' Park and they're attacking the Gallowgate end in this first half.
