Papiss Cisse and Yoan Gouffran fired Newcastle into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup to set up a home tie against Manchester City.
Leeds were backed by almost 6,000 away fans and hit the woodwork early on, while Tim Krul made a good save to deny Matt Smith.
But once Cisse scored with a fine header from Sammy Ameobi's cross, Alan Pardew's side always looked likely to progress and Yoan Gouffran made sure in the second half with Ameobi again the provider.
