It's Mike In The Middle At Villa Park

Mike Dean will take charge of Newcastle United's Premier League fixture away at Aston Villa on Saturday

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Mike Dean will take charge of Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League fixture away at Aston Villa on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

It is the first time this season the Wirral-based official has overseen a Magpies' match this term, but he was in the middle of three matches involving United during the 2012/13 season.

Coincidentally, the last of those was Newcastle's trip to Villa Park back in January, where goals from Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye earned a 2-1 victory.

On that evening in the Midlands, Dean booked seven players including Jonas Gutierrez and Shola Ameobi.

In total this season, the experienced referee has been appointed to three matches across the Premier League, Championship and Europa League, handing out ten yellow cards and no reds.

Dean, aged 45, began officiating in 1985 and progressed through the ranks to the full referees' list in 1997 and the Select Group of referees for the Premier League in 2000.

He has taken charge of the 2004 Community Shield, the 2008 FA Cup final and the 2011 League Cup final.

On Saturday at Villa Park, Dean will be assisted by John Brooks and Simon Bennett, with Steve Martin the game's fourth official.
