SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons93mins: Full time and it's finished 0-0, which was probably a fair result. Newcastle were much more solid than they were at Manchester City five days earlier - but still haven't scored in the Barclays Premier League in their opening two games.

92mins: Sammy Ameobi's cross from the left catches everyone out and bounces back off the far post with Jaaskelainen stranded before Gouffran spoons the loose ball over - both sides could have won this in the dying minutes.

90mins: There will be three minutes of stoppage time, the board going up as Newcastle appeal for a penalty as Gouffran goes down as he goes for a cross from the left.

89mins: West Ham thought they'd won it but Maiga's effort was ruled out for offside. O'Brien's cross found Morrison, who turned and shot with Maiga sticking out a leg to divert it beyond Krul but as the away fans went wild, the flag was raised.

84mins: Jarvis skips past Debuchy and stands up a cross which is headed as far as Cole on the edge of the box, but his powerful strike flashes just wide.

81mins: The constant rain means the pitch is now slippery and that's contributing to an open match now - it could be an exciting final few minutes.

SUB-MDC-icons75mins: Mohamed Diame comes off and Ravel Morrison - or Ravel as the name on the back of his shirt insists - is on in his place. That's an attacking player on for a holding midfielder - brave stuff from Sam Allardyce.

SUB-MDC-icons72mins: Another change for Newcastle: Yoan Gouffran is on in a straight swap for Cisse, who hasn't had one of his better games although it's not for want of trying.

SUB-MDC-icons66mins: Alan Pardew responds by introducing the talented if unpredictable Sammy Ameobi in place of Sylvain Marveaux. Ameobi caught the eye at Manchester City on Monday - can he do so again?

SUB-MDC-icons64mins: The first substitution of the game sees Downing replaced by Joe Cole, who is always capable of creating something.

60mins: Kevin Nolan scored the winner in this fixture last season and he should find the target again today as Downing crosses from the right and the former United skipper creeps into the box unmarked but heads wide. Nine times out of ten, Nolan puts those chances away.

55mins: The home fans are on their feet as Marveaux feeds Santon on the left and the Italian cuts inside but shoots wide. United have increased the tempo in this second half though at an increasingly wet St. James' Park.

51mins: Mathieu Debuchy's clipped pass into a dangerous area causes problems for West Ham, with their defence leaving it to Jaaskelainen but the goalkeeper unwilling to stray from his box. Cisse latches onto it and the visitors concede a corner but it leads to nothing.

48mins: Nolan's intellgent pass releases Downing but he isn't the quickest and can't outpace Coloccini. He gets in a shot from a narrow angle all the same but it's comfortable for Krul.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: West Ham restart the game and Newcastle are now kicking towards the Gallowgate.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: Marveaux swings over a free-kick from the left and Yanga-Mbiwa heads wide. Jaaskelainen takes the resulting goal kick and then Phil Dowd blows his whistle for half time.

45mins: There will be one minute of stoppage time. Today's attendance is 49,622 including 2,200 West Ham fans.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons44mins: Joey O'Brien becomes the first player booked for a foul on Ben Arfa and there should be no real complaints - although Kevin Nolan has a moan to referee Phil Dowd anyway!

43mins: Ben Arfa cleverly jinks inside with some lovely footwork and then hammers the ball over the bar from 22 yards. Surely one of these will fly in for the Frenchman if he keeps on firing in the shots.

38mins: Jarvis crosses from the left and Stewart Downing, the ex-Middlesbrough man, decides to head across goal rather than towards it. Maiga can't force home and another West Ham chance goes begging.

36mins: Anita lays the ball off for Sissoko - Newcastle's best player so far - to curl a first-time shot the wrong side of the angle of post and bar.

34mins: United nearly take the lead from a set-piece of their own, but Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa heads just off target from Marveaux's right-wing corner.

33mins: James Collins pumps a free kick into the box and again Reid is the man attacking it. He just fails to get a touch but that seems to be the visitors' tactic from set-pieces inside their own half and it has almost worked on two occasions now.

29mins: United string a succession of short passes together before Ben Arfa strikes but although this one is closer to its intended destination, his low shot is wide and was never going to trouble Jaaskelainen anyway.

27mins: Jaaskelainen's long free kick is flicked on and Reid steals in to prod over the bar from close range. That was a bit of a let off for the Magpies.

25mins: A lovely move involving Cisse and Sylvain Marveaux sees the latter slide the ball out to Ben Arfa 25 yards from goal but the Frenchman hasn't found his range yet and for the second time sends a strike well off target.

18mins: The swashbuckling right-back Guy Demel makes progress on the flank before delivering a great cross for Modibo Maiga, but the forward sends a glancing header wide and judging by his reaction, knows he should have done better.

13mins: Anita tries to thread the ball through to Papiss Cisse but Reid gets a toe to it first - but the defender almost diverts the ball past his own goalkeeper, with Jussi Jaaskelainen scrambling across his goal and clearly relieved as the ball rolls out for a corner.

7mins: Moussa Sissoko embarks upon a strong, driving run from his own half to win a free-kick 25 yards from goal. He shrugged off two or three challenges with a mixture of pace and pure power and that's what the home fans want to see more of from the Frenchman, who showed that he's capable of such bursts in his first few games for the Club last season. Alas, Hatem Ben Arfa's free-kick from a central position flies high into the Leazes stand - a disappointing end to an encouraging passage of play.

3mins: Matt Jarvis forces an early corner for the Hammers and his delivery finds its way to Winston Reid at the far post but his goalbound effort is stopped on the line by Vurnon Anita. Newcastle had started brightly though.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Former team-mates Fabricio Coloccini and Kevin Nolan have vacated the centre circle to allow Newcastle to take kick-off, attacking towards the Leazes end in this first half. United are in black and white with the Hammers wearing their traditional claret and blue colours.
