Man City v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The big moments from the Etihad Stadium, where Newcastle had a man sent off and conceded four goals to a strong Man City side

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Manchester City 4 (Silva, Aguero, Toure, Nasri)
Newcastle United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins: The final whistle blows on a disappointing evening for Newcastle. It's not how they wanted to start the new season but they were always up against it against a Manchester City side firing on all cylinders and Steven Taylor's red card killed the game as a contest. The weekend's game against West Ham should provide a more accurate reflection of where the Magpies are right now. For now, as the strains of Oasis blast out over the speakers, United will just have to Roll With It.

90mins: Just like in the first half, there will be three minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game.

89mins: Debuchy is caught napping by Nasri, who pinches the ball off him and rolls it to Dzeko but the striker's shot is weak and straight at Krul.

86mins: Newcastle are spared the ignomy of conceding a fifth goal as Negredo taps home after Krul had made yet another save but his celebrations are abruptly halted by the assistant referee's flag.

SUB-MDC-icons80mins: After Dzeko heads inches over the bar, summer signing Alvaro Negredo is handed his City debut in place of Silva.

GOAL-MDC-icons75mins - MAN CITY GOAL (4-0): Manuel Pellegrini's side don't need any help to score goals but they get some here as Nasri makes it four. A harmless ball could be cut out by one of two defenders but they leave it to one another and Nasri races through to slot past the exposed Krul despite the best efforts of Debuchy.

SUB-MDC-icons71mins: Vincent Kompany, the impervious City captain, has picked up a knock and is replaced by Javi Garcia.

68mins: Dzeko heads wide from a City corner and United are at least keeping on fighting despite behind three goals and one man behind.

SUB-MDC-icons65mins: Alan Pardew makes his third and final change as Sammy Ameobi replaces Ben Arfa.

63mins: City again break swiftly and slickly as Dummett is tackled at one end after a positive run and then moments later Dzeko shoots and Krul pushes around the post.

SUB-MDC-icons61mins: Aguero makes way for Samir Nasri with the home fans affording the Argentine a standing ovation.

57mins: Gael Clichy hammers in a shot which Debuchy blocks. It could be a long last half an hour here with ten men against this classy City oufit.

53mins: More astonishing play from the home side. A long ball is somehow trapped by Silva, who then gets in a shot from six yards which Krul does well to block and then gather at the second attempt.

GOAL-MDC-icons51mins - MAN CITY GOAL (3-0): Even Krul can't keep out a tremendous free-kick from Yaya Toure, though. The Ivorian bends a 20 yard strike into the corner and now it's definitely game over.

49mins: What a save from Tim Krul. Aguero dinks the ball across from the left and Dzeko meets it with a downward header which Krul somehow gets down to push away and Coloccini scrambles the ball away.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: The home side take kick-off to get the second half started, with Newcastle now kicking towards their supporters behind the goal.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+3mins: Man City deservedly lead at the break after a classy display, but their penchant for making a meal out of challenges is at odds with some of the beautiful football they have played and, with several Newcastle players already booked, Steven Taylor's red card on the stroke of half time has compounded United's misery.

Red-Card-MDC-iconsSUB-MDC-icons45+2mins: The night gets worse as Taylor is sent off, although he looks to have done little wrong. Aguero throws himself to earth as the pair go up for a header - the defender catching him with his arm but not his elbow - and it's a straight red for Taylor. Yoan Gouffran is therefore sacrificed as Paul Dummett comes on for his league debut for Newcastle.

45+1mins: Aguero beats the offside trap and cuts inside but sees his shot strike the arm of Taylor - it was probably more ball-to-hand than hand-to-ball, though, and Marriner is again uninterested.

45mins: A long-range drive from Tiote is easily saved by Hart before, at the other end, Dzeko heads narrowly wide. There will be three minutes of added time.

SUB-MDC-icons44mins: Gutierrez, who had been a doubt before the match with a hamstring injury, pulls up and is replaced by Vurnon Anita.

41mins: Now Navas throws himself to the ground and rolls around in apparent agony after a firm but fair shoulder challenge by Yanga-Mbiwa, already on a yellow card. Man City are too good to have to resort to such play-acting.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons40mins: Debuchy is the latest player booked after he throws the ball away. It's a silly yellow card to pick up with more than half the game still to go.

36mins: Pablo Zabaleta beats Cheick Tiote in a 50-50, allowing Fernandinho to thread a ball through towards Dzeko who bizarrely decides to take a dive when he could well have ran onto it and scored. Marriner correctly decides that it's not a foul by Fabricio Coloccini, who was stood a few yards away.

34mins: Jesus Navas takes the resulting free-kick from the left and fortunately nobody gets a touch because the slightest nick would have taken it past Krul and killed off the game.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons33mins: It's suddenly turning into a busy night for referee Marriner - he books Sissoko for a wild kick at Silva. United need to keep their heads here.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons32mins: And another yellow, this time for Fernandinho, as the Brazilian trips Gouffran as he attempts to break forward.

Yellow-Card-MDC-iconsYellow-Card-MDC-icons31mins: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Dzeko are both booked after the Newcastle man commits a foul by the corner flag and the City striker reacts angrily.

26mins: Ben Arfa goes on a superb run past three players and sees his shot blocked. He looks to be Newcastle's best hope of sparking a comeback.

GOAL-MDC-icons22mins - MAN CITY GOAL (2-0): The home side turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye to go 2-0 up. At one end, Ben Arfa poked the ball to Papiss Cisse but he couldn't hold onto it and within seconds, the ball is in the net through Aguero. He was fed by Dzeko but still had it all to do as Taylor stood him up. However, the South American got the ball out of his feet and drilled a sweet, low strike past Krul.

20mins: Fernandinho, the City new boy, wins the ball from Debuchy and sends Dzeko through but the striker flashes his shot wide of the far post.

18mins: Ben Arfa robs Silva on the halfway line and heads towards goal but is thwarted by a great sliding tackle from Joleon Lescott. Had the defender not made that, the Magpies man was in on goal.

12mins: Dzeko slides in Yaya Toure who takes a tumble under the challenge of Mathieu Debuchy - he certainly went down easily for such a big man and referee Andre Marriner ignores the penalty shouts from the home supporters.

10mins: The away fans are celebrating as Yoan Gouffran slots the ball past Joe Hart but the joy is shortlived - the Frenchman was offside when Ben Arfa picked him out.

GOAL-MDC-icons6mins - MAN CITY GOAL (1-0): It's been coming - the home side go in front. David Silva started the move as he found Dzeko on the left and when his cross was partially headed clear by Steven Taylor, the little Spaniard Silva was there to head home from close range. A tough test has just become much more difficult.

4mins: At the other end, Hatem Ben Arfa shoots from 25 yards but his effort zips over. It's been an open start to this first Monday Night Football match of 2013/14.

3mins: Another attack from the City right brings another fine save from Krul. This time the goalkeeper gets a vital fingertip to push Edin Dzeko's shot around the post.

2mins: Almost from the off, the Blues look dangerous and it takes a great save from Tim Krul to deny Sergio Aguero after a swift move which stemmed from the City right. Moussa Sissoko then made an important block but United are already living dangerously.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Newcastle, in black and white, take the kick-off at the Etihad Stadium after a minute's applause for Bert Trautmann, the legendary former Manchester City goalkeeper who passed away recently. The away fans are getting right behind their team as another Barclays Premier Leaugue campaign begins in earnest for the Magpies.
