Loan Watch: Opening Day

Written by Newcastle Utd

Four of Newcastle United's loan stars were in action for their respective clubs over the weekend

None of Newcastle's loan stars managed to help their teams record a victory on the opening weekend of the Football League season.

In the Championship, Birmingham were beaten 1-0 at home by Waford on Saturday, with Shane Ferguson playing for 81 minutes at left-back before being replaced by Chris Burke.

James Tavernier's competitive debut for Shrewsbury came against another of his former clubs, MK Dons, and the two sides drew 0-0 in Shropshire.

But while there were no goals there, there were five scored in Newport County's first match back in the league. Unfortunately for Accrington Stanley, four of them were scored by the Welsh outfit.

Michael Richardson, who agreed a one-month loan spell last week, played the whole game for James Beattie's Stanley side and was involved in their late consolation goal.

On Sunday, Mehdi Abeid made his first appearance for Panathiaikos in a friendly against Lazio. Starting the match in midfield, he played for the first 73 minutes.
