Duo Narrowly Miss Out On Finals

Written by Newcastle Utd

Brandon Miele and Lubo Satka have both just missed out on qualification for the European Under-19 Championships with Ireland and Slovakia respectively

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland both missed out on qualification for this summer's European Under-19 Championship finals, despite the best efforts of Newcastle pair Lubo Satka and Brandon Miele.

Both teams went into their respective final qualifying match on Tuesday knowing that a win could see them reach the finals in Lithuania, which start next month.

However Ireland could only draw 0-0 with Serbia, who won the group. Midfielder Miele played the whole game as Paul Doolin's men ended the qualifying campaign with three draws from three games.

A win against Serbia would have seen them top the group, though, as Switzerland were beaten 2-0 by Satka's Slovakia in the other game. That meant a three-way tie at the top, but Serbia won the group by virtue of having the best goal difference.

The Magpies defender played 90 minutes and was booked.

At senior level, meanwhile, United skipper Fabricio Coloccini was an unused substitute for Argentina as they drew 1-1 with Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier.
