Former Newcastle goalkeeper Tommy Wright is the new manager of Scottish Premier League side St. Johnstone.

He replaces Steve Lomas, who led the Perth side to a third-place finish last term and into next season's Europa League qualifying rounds.

Wright had been Lomas' assistant since November 2011 and he will now be assisted by Saints left-back Callum Davidson.

Fondly known as 'The Barman' during his time at St. James' Park, Wright had two spells with the Magpies. His first was between 1988 and 1993 when me made 84 appearances, and he was in goal throughout United's flying start to the promotion season of 1992/93.

He then rejoined on loan from Manchester City during an injury crisis in 1999 and made three appearances. After retiring as a player, he managed a handful of teams in his native Northern Ireland.

Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid spent the second half of last season on loan with St. Johnstone.
