Alan Pardew let out a huge "sigh of relief" after seeing his Newcastle United come from behind to secure a crucial Barclays Premier League victory at Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.
The 2-1 win was only the Magpies' second top flight away triumph this season but was enough to secure their status for another year.
Hatem Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran fired the visitors to all three points at Loftus Road, and Pardew told nufcTV: "It's a sigh of relief for the city, for our county and for everyone associated with this fantastic football club.
"We had to do it the hard way. Some of the decisions today were terrible in my opinion, on a day as crucial as this, but we still came through.
"When there's a big club in this position there is extra pressure. But once we got the goal, which was good fortune in terms of the decision for us, suddenly we settled down and were better then.
"And we got a fantastic win. This is a tough place to come and Arsenal only just got past them last weekend. We've done it with a lot of key players missing."
Pardew also paid tribute to the 1,600 Geordies who roared Newcastle on in West London on Sunday, and many more who have got behind the side on their travels in England and Europe throughout the 2012/13 campaign.
"It was great to see our away fans enjoy themselves because we have let them down this year in games we should have got points from," he explained.
"We should have had more points away from home than we've got. They have been brilliant all year."
