Newcastle v Liverpool: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle suffered their heaviest loss of the season against a rampant Liverpool side - these are the moments that mattered

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Newcastle United 0
Liverpool 6 (Agger 3, Henderson 17, 76, Sturridge 53, 60, Borini 74)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins: It's full-time and Newcastle have suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against a rampant Liverpool side. From the moment Daniel Agger headed them in front, the Reds were on fire and Jordan Henderson made it two after 17 minutes. United rallied at the start of the second half but Daniel Sturridge's double ended the match as a contest before substitute Fabio Borini and Henderson with his second made it an embarassing afternoon for the Magpies.

90mins: There will be three minutes of stoppage time to be played. It's a credit to the home fans that there is a chorus of 'we love Newcastle, we do' coming from the Strawberry corner even at 6-0 down.

86mins: Ben Arfa plays a lovely pass to Anita on the right and his low cross causes problems for Liverpool but, under pressure, Cisse swipes at the ball and can't send his effort in the desired direction.

SUB-MDC-icons84mins: As Cisse sends a decent effort narrowly wide for Newcastle, Liverpool make a double substitution. Suso is on for the excellent Coutinho and Jonjo Shelvey replaces the equally impressive Sturridge.

82mins: Elliot spares further Newcastle blushes with a fine fingertip save to push a stunning effort from Coutinho onto the woodwork. His shot was flying into the top corner until the keeper got a vital touch.

GOAL-MDC-icons76mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-6): And now it gets worse. From the resulting free-kick, Henderson's delivery flies straight in - it was a cross from the ex-Sunderland man but evaded everybody, including Elliot.

Yellow---Red-Card-MDC-icons75mins: A bad day gets worse as Debuchy is shown a second yellow card for a poor, late challenge on Coutinho, who had skipped beyond the Frenchman.

GOAL-MDC-icons74mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-5): Borini scores with his first touch - the ball is crossed in from the right and he controls and finishes. It's been a five-star showing from the Reds but anything but from the Magpies.

SUB-MDC-icons73mins: Brendan Rodgers makes his first change as Fabio Borini comes on for Steven Gerrard, who is warmly applauded off the pitch by the away fans and also some home fans.

69mins: This time it's Taylor's turn to thwart Sturridge - the striker looked a certain scorer but the defender slid in with a great last-ditch challenge.

67mins: Gouffran lays the ball off to Sissoko, who makes a strong run but then mishits his shot from just outside the area. Liverpool break quickly once again and it takes some good defending from Yanga-Mbiwa to prevent Sturridge from racing in to complete his hat-trick.

SUB-MDC-icons65mins: United make a third and final change as Vurnon Anita replaces Cheick Tiote.

GOAL-MDC-icons60mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-4): Taylor makes a good block from Coutinho after Sturridge had threaded the ball to him but Newcastle concede possession cheaply in midfield and Liverpool once again carve United open far too easily. A simple ball over the top allows Henderson the freedom of the right hand side and he plays the ball across goal to give Sturridge a tap in.

56mins: Cisse tees up Ben Arfa, whose shot is blocked by the arm of Lucas Leiva. No penalty according to Marriner, though, and Cisse is furious as he jabs his finger at Reina, the Liverpool keeper.

GOAL-MDC-icons53mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-3): United looked capable of getting a goal back and perhaps even staging a comeback but suddenly, it would appear that it's game over. Ben Arfa seemed to be fouled on the halfway line and Liverpool broke swiftly, with Coutinho poking the ball through for Sturridge who sent an emphatic finish beyond Elliot. Those two have been the best players on the pitch.

52mins: The transformation in Newcastle has been amazing and only a poor first touch from Cabaye prevents the skipper from having a clear sight of goal after Debuchy's cross was half-cleared towards the edge of the box.

49mins: Gouffran sends a deft header too close to Pepe Reina after a left-wing delivery from Cabaye. Gouffran and Tiote have already had shots bravely blocked in this half, with Newcastle starting well just like Liverpool did in the first.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Alan Pardew sends his players out early for the second half and makes a double substitution. Hatem Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran are on in place of James Perch and Jonas Gutierrez. Today's attendance has been announced as 52,351 including 3,200 away supporters and it's Newcastle who get the second half underway, attacking towards the Gallowgate. Straight away, Tiote bursts into the box and goes down but Marriner isn't interested in the crowd's appeals for a penalty.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: Newcastle trail at the break after a nightmare opening 20 minutes. Since then, they've improved but other than a header wide from James Perch, United have done little to suggest that they can claw themselves back into this match. Goals from Daniel Agger and Jordan Henderson are the difference as the teams head down the tunnel.

45mins: After Marriner takes no action following a coming together between Tiote and Johnson - the latter who had already been booked, although Tiote was perhaps the protagonist - the board goes up to signal that there will be two minutes of stoppage time. Johnson then impedes Gutierrez after the Argentine had knocked the ball past him on the left but again the right-back escapes with only a talking to.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons44mins: Another yellow card - the fifth of what has not been a dirty game - as Steven Taylor goes into Marriner's notebook. Sturridge turned the defender on the halfway line and Taylor trod on his boot to prevent him from getting away.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons41mins: Liverpool's Johnson is booked for a foul on Tiote. Referee Andre Marriner played a good advantage but brought play back to show the Reds player a card.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons39mins: Jonas Gutierrez is booked, somewhat harshly. He was sold short by Cheick Tiote's pass and tried to recover the situation but succeeded only in fouling Sturridge.

36mins: After a superb passing move from Newcastle which was totally out of keeping with anything else they have produced today, Massadio Haidara bursts down the left and sends over a perfect delivery which is headed wide by James Perch. He's not known for his goalscoring but that was a great chance for United to pull one back. At least there were a few encouraging signs there though and the crowd, until now understandably flat, start to respond.

32mins: Hatem Ben Arfa, Yoan Gouffran and Shola Ameobi are sent to warm up and the trio are applauded by the Leazes end fans, who have had little else to cheer so far.

29mins: Gerrard flashes a half-volley wide for the visitors after Coutinho flicks the ball into the path of his skipper.

27mins: A shot on goal for Newcastle at last, as Gutierrez takes aim from outside the box, but his strike flies well wide.

24mins: United have barely had a kick - Sturridge drives at the Newcastle defence and sends a piledriver of an effort straight down the throat of Elliot, who is able to hold.

Yellow-Card-MDC-iconsYellow-Card-MDC-icons20mins: Debuchy and Sturridge are both booked after squaring up when an offside decision went against the Liverpool man and Debuchy took issue to Sturridge nudging the ball away in frustration.

GOAL-MDC-icons17mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-2): Newcastle are torn apart by a flowing Liverpool move, finished by ex-Sunderland player Jordan Henderson. Coutinho receives the ball from Sturridge before cleverly playing it back into the path of the former Chelsea man, who in turn spots a great run from Henderson and unselfishly plays him in rather than trying to round Elliot. Henderson can barely miss and slots the ball into the empty net to double the Reds' lead. What a dreadful, dreadful start for the Magpies.

12mins: Johnson races onto Steven Gerrard's sublime pass, cuts inside Yanga-Mbiwa and plays an inventive pass for Sturridge. His powerful shot from inside the box is well parried by Elliot but this time the assistant referee's flag is up.

GOAL-MDC-icons3mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-1): The away side's bright start pays off. Philippe Coutinho dinks a ball in from the left and Daniel Agger beats a statuesque backline to the punch to send a looping header beyond Rob Elliot. Newcastle were hoping for offside but instead they're a goal down inside three minutes.

2mins: A strong run down the right from Glen Johnson, one of the players Hodgson will be watching, ends in a low cross which Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa steals away from Daniel Sturridge. Then another cross from the right-back needs an acrobatic clearance from Debuchy to take it away from danger.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Liverpool get the match underway, kicking towards the Gallowgate end in this first half in their all red kit. There's a blue sky but a chill in the air above St. James' Park, which is full to capacity today. England manager Roy Hodgson is in the crowd.
