Written by Newcastle Utd

Antony Gautier will referee Newcastle's Europa League quarter-final first leg tie away at Benfica on Thursday

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Antony Gautier will referee Newcastle United's Europa League quarter-final tie away at Benfica on Thursday night (8.05pm kick-off).

The Frenchman takes charge at the Estadio da Luz, in Lisbon, as the Magpies look for a positive first leg result to take back to Tyneside next week.

Gautier has overseen 32 games this season across his homeland, the Europa League, the Champions League and international fixtures, handing out 115 yellow cards, 13 reds and awarding six penalties.

Recently, the 35-year-old was the man in the middle of Wales' 2-1 win away at Scotland in a World Cup qualifier, where he sent off a player from each side.

On Thursday, Gautier will be assisted by Cyril Gringore and Freji Harchay, with Laurent Duhamel and Ruddy Buquet the additional assistant referees behind each goal.

Guillaume Debart will be the game's fourth official.
