It was a disappointing night on the international front for Newcastle's players as none of the Magpies on duty for their countries on Tuesday managed a win between them.
England did record a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw in Montenegro but Steven Taylor could only watch from the stands as Roy Hodgson's side failed to cope with the hosts' second-half pressure and saw Wayne Rooney's early opener cancelled out by Dejan Damjanovic's 77th minute equaliser.
Shane Ferguson started for Northern Ireland at home to Israel but came off in the 72nd minute and five minutes later Michael O'Neill's team were behind when Lior Rafaelov fired home.
And with six minutes left, Eden Ben Basat made it 2-0 to the visitors at Windsor Park.
Elsewhere, France were beaten 1-0 by Spain, a result which saw Les Bleus lose top spot in Group I to their opponents. Pedro got the only goal of the game and Yohan Cabaye started, playing for 70 minutes and picking up a yellow card.
Moussa Sissoko was an 82nd minute substitute while Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was unused.
Meanwhile in their first match of the Montaigu Tournament, England's under-16s gained a 1-1 draw against Holland with United's Kyle Cameron and Adam Armstrong both starting at Beauvoir sur Mer and playing the whole game.
In the other group, Turkey drew 2-2 with hosts France but Daniel Barlaser did not play.
