The close friends came up against each other at the Riverside Stadium and for most of the match it looked as though honours would end even - especially when Ferguson cleared a Jonathan Woodgate header off the line and Jack Butland made a good save from Ameobi.
But Ameobi - who started after being sidelined with a hamstring strain the previous weekend - came off after 77 minutes and four minutes later, Ferguson surged into the box and crossed from the left for Nikola Zigic to bundle the ball home from close range.
His work done, the Northern Ireland international was then replaced by Steven Caldwell for the final seven minutes.
Meanwhile in League Two, Michael Richardson made his first start for Gillingham as the league leaders drew 1-1 at Morecambe. The midfielder came off at half-time having came close to scoring at both ends.
First, his attempted headed clearance clipped his own crossbar before he fired over when well placed soon afterwards.
Injury again ruled Bradden Inman out for Crewe as they drew 1-1 at home to Shrewsbury in League One. The young Aussie was back on Tyneside this week as he continues to recover from an ankle problem, but hopes to be back before next month's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley.
Sunday sees Newcastle duo Paul Dummett and Conor Newton involved for St. Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final against Hearts.
