Newcastle v Stoke: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The action as it happened from United's last gasp win over Stoke City in the Barclays Premier League

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Newcastle United 2 (Cabaye 73, Cisse 90+2)
Stoke City 1 (Walters pen 67)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: Papiss Cisse's late goal has given Newcastle a great win over Stoke. It's not enough to take them above the Potters on goal difference but it keeps them heading in the right direction. They came from behind just as they did against Southampton in their last home game and were good value for the result. Next up it's Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League on Thursday night - get your tickets here.

GOAL-MDC-icons90+2mins: NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): Deep into stoppage time, Newcastle have surely won it through Papiss Cisse. Substitute Campbell was involved, playing the ball to Marveaux who then slid a great pass to Cisse, who beat the offside trap and took his time before poking past Begovic. It's just what the Magpies have deserved. Stoke were preparing to bring on Charlie Adam but now he has to sit down.

90mins: There will be four minutes of stoppage time, with Stoke seemingly happy with a point but Newcastle still pushing for a winner.

SUB-MDC-icons88mins: Another former Sunderland man comes on for Stoke - Dean Whitehead replaces Jerome, who takes an age to walk off the pitch.

SUB-MDC-icons86mins: Cisse sends a clever back-header towards goal which Begovic saves but can't prevent from going behind for a corner. Then comes a proud moment for Adam Campbell as he makes his Barclays Premier League debut, replacing Gouffran for the final four minutes.

85mins: Andy Wilkinson goes for goal after winning the ball on the left but it goes well wide.

SUB-MDC-icons84mins: Stoke's first change sees ex-Sunderland man Kenwyne Jones replace Peter Crouch. Jones gets a few jeers as he comes on but Michael Owen will probably be expecting worse if he gets a run-out!

80mins: Cabaye goes for goal from the left-hand angle of the box and nearly catches Begovic out, but it zips just wide of the keeper's near post.

79mins: Walters plays the ball to Crouch, who falls over but then springs to his feet to send a weak 20 yard shot towards goal which Elliot falls to his left to hold.

SUB-MDC-icons74mins: Alan Pardew makes his first substitutions, bringing on Sylvain Marveaux for Tiote and Massadio Haidara for Santon.

GOAL-MDC-icons73mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): Order is eventually restored so that Newcastle can take the free-kick and, right on the edge of the box, Cabaye steps up to stick it straight in the top corner, in off the underside of the bar. What a free-kick  - Stoke's lead lasted for just six minutes.

70mins: Gouffran breaks through and is denied by a sliding tackle on the edge of the area by Begovic, who raced quickly from his line. Sissoko latches onto it but is fouled as he prepares to shoot and both benches become involved in an argument as players from both sides also exchange words.

GOAL-MDC-icons67mins - STOKE GOAL (0-1): Walters has missed a couple of penalties recently but not this one - he sends Elliot the wrong way with an unstoppable spot-kick and Stoke arev in front.

PENALTY-MDC-icons66mins: Stoke have a penalty. They broke swiftly through Jerome, who played in Jonathan Walters and Tiote flew in to try and win the ball but only succeeded in bringing down the Stoke man. It was a clear penalty.

Yellow-Card-MDC-iconsYellow-Card-MDC-icons64mins: Cisse and Marc Wilson are both booked after a coming together inside the Stoke half. It started off as handbags but Cisse then flicked out a hand towards Wilson's face and other referees might have shown him red. Common sense prevails, though, and it's just a yellow.

56mins: More decent possession from United ends in a Gutierrez shot which takes a big deflection to send it looping just over the bar, but the latest Newcastle corner is again dealt with by the Stoke defence.

51mins: Tiote wins a great tackle and then clips the ball over the top for Sissoko, who tries to dink the ball over Begovic but sends it wide. The keeper wipes the Magpies man out after the ball is gone and Alan Pardew wants a penalty but Marriner ignores his shouts.

47mins: Cabaye tries his luck from range after some patient build-up but it's well wide from the Frenchman, who scored twice in this fixture last season.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Today's attendance is 50,703 including 610 away fans and most of them are back in their seats as Stoke get the second half started, with Newcastle now attacking towards the Gallowgate end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: It's been a fairly dull first half and that's reflected in the 0-0 scoreline, but it's Newcastle who are looking to make things happen here. If they can just improve their final ball, there's no reason why they can't go on and win this. Click here for the half-time report.

45mins: There will be just one minute of added time.

42mins: As the snow starts to fall again, Newcastle move the ball nicely with Cabaye finding Santon and then getting the ball back before hitting a low drive which is deflected just wide.

37mins: Cabaye's diagonal ball from the left catches out the Stoke defence and Gouffran connects with it ten yards out, but blazes over the bar under pressure from a couple of red shirts. It's probably the closest either side has come to a goal.

33mins: Santon skips past Geoff Cameron and then Shotton to work space for a shot but his low effort is dealt with comfortably by Begovic as the Italian still waits for a first Newcastle goal.

29mins: Davide Santon loses out to Ryan Shotton on the right and then appears to clip the Stoke man as he heads into the box. Shotton appeals for a penalty but referee Andre Marriner isn't interested and any offence was marginally outside the box anyway.

21mins: A cleverly-worked corner from United is eventually worked to Jonas Gutierrez on the edge of the box. The Argentine twists and turns to make room for a shot and he curls it agonisingly wide.

16mins: Mathieu Debuchy finds compatriot Yoan Gouffran with a clever pass and the ex-Bordeaux man's shot from a tight angle is held by Asmir Begovic. Then as United mount another attack, Yohan Cabaye sizes up a shot from 22 yards and it goes just the wrong side of the far post with Begovic at full stretch. United are starting to gain the upper hand now.

14mins: Papiss Cisse lays the ball off for Moussa Sissoko, who advances towards goal and lets fly from 25 yards but his effort swerves well off target.

12mins: Elliot punches away a right-wing corner from Glenn Whelan but the ball drops for Ryan Shotton on the edge of the area. His first-time effort is struck well enough but it's too central and the Newcastle keeper is well positioned to catch.

3mins: Peter Crouch gets in a shot on the turn from just outside the box but it lacks the power to trouble Rob Elliot, who collects the ball easily. Crouch lost several teeth after a collision with Fabricio Coloccini when Newcastle took on Stoke at the Britannia Stadium in November and that was fairly toothless from the former England striker.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: The snow which was falling prior to the match has stopped just in time for kick-off, which is taken by Newcastle. The Magpies are kicking towards the Leazes end in the first half and are in black and white, while Stoke are in red and white stripes.
