Sammy Ameobi missed out with a slight hamstring injury as Middlesbrough's promotion hopes suffered another dent on Saturday.
The Newcastle loanee, who had scored once and created another goal in two appearances since arriving from St. James' Park, didn't travel to Ashton Gate as Tony Mowbray's men took on Bristol City.
And his presence was missed as Boro lost 2-0 to the Championship strugglers - their second defeat in a week.
However elsewhere in the division, Shane Ferguson made his third appearance for Birmingham and played the whole game as Lee Clark's men came from behind to beat Derby. He was voted the sponsors' man of the match.
The Northern Irish winger was booked for a foul on Valentin Gjokaj as City won 3-1 at St. Andrew's with Wes Thomas grabbing a brace and Nathan Redmond also on target after Ben Davies had given the Rams a first half lead.
In the Scottish Premier League, Mehdi Abeid appeared in the 81st minute as St. Johnstone climbed to fourth with a 2-0 home win over Kilmarnock.
Meanwhile, Paul Dummett helped St. Mirren keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Dundee United, playing the whole game at centre-back and winning man of the match. Conor Newton also started but, with next weekend's Scottish League Cup final in mind and having been booked, was replaced by Jon Robertson at half-time.
Michael Richardson finally made his Gillingham debut as a 68th minute substitute in a 2-1 win over Plymouth which maintained their position at the top of League Two.
In League One, Bradden Inman missed out again through injury as Crewe won 2-1 at Colchester.
