Logan's Fun As Steven Breaks Duck

Just over a year since making his second-string bow, Steven Logan finally scored his first goal for Newcastle's under-21s on Friday - and it was well worth the wait.

The Scotland youth international has been a regular part of Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley's side since his debut at Villa Park in March 2012 but getting on the scoresheet had proved elusive.

That was until the hour mark against Manchester City at Whitley Park, where he crashed a sublime half-volley past Ian Lawlor to put the Magpies ahead. Marcos Lopes converted a late penalty for the visitors and steal Logan's thunder but the 18-year-old anchorman was still delighted to get off the mark at long last - and in such spectacular style.

"I've tried so many of those ones and every time I seem to blast them over the bar or the goalkeeper makes a good save, so it's nice to actually get a goal," he told nufc.co.uk.

"It's been a year now so I've been waiting for it. It actually came as a surprise to me - I looked up and said 'it actually went in, it's actually gone in!'.

"The cross got a touch off Romain (Amalfitano) and I've just swung my foot at it and hoped for the best - and thankfully the best came out of it.

"It's a nice surprise ahead of the weekend and it's a good time for it to come before the game against Bolton on Monday."

Logan has played at right-back for a large chunk of the campaign but is more at home in central midfield where his tough-tackling and neat passing can truly come into play.

But he admitted that he would love to add more goals to his game having broken his duck.

"I'd like to if it comes, and hopefully it will," he said. "It would be good if I could get a few more and help the team."

After a drab first half, the second period exploded into life and Logan explained: "We made a change (England under-17 striker Alex Gilliead coming on), someone that would run in behind and work hard up front to put them under pressure, and the rest of us just started firing.

"We all put them under pressure and got a goal out of it. We were unfortunate not to get a win.

"At the moment we're in decent form and hopefully we can get something out of the Bolton game and push on from there.

"There are a lot of young players in the squad. Willie was saying there are seven or eight of us that are from the Academy so it's a good run out for them as well, a good experience, and hopefully we can use that and progress from there."
