Sammy Ameobi enjoyed a dream debut for Middlesbrough as he scored a stunning goal in a 2-1 win over Championship leaders Cardiff City.
The England under-21 ace, who joined Boro on loan until the end of the season during the week, struck in the 17th minute as a superb piece of skill took two defenders out of the game before his powerful shot flew past David Marshall.
Kieron Dyer had already put the home side ahead at the Riverside and, despite Aron Gunnarsson's 67th minute effort, Middlesbrough picked up an important victory.
Shane Ferguson also made his debut for Birmingham but unlike Ameobi there was no perfect start for him.
His side were 3-0 down to Hull when he came on as a half-time substitute for Callum Reilly and they ended up losing 5-2.
Michael Richardson still awaits his Gillingham debut as he was an unused substitute for the fourth match in a row as the Kent side drew 1-1 at Aldershot.
Earlier in the day, St. Mirren were beaten 2-1 by Celtic in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.
Conor Newton played the full game for Danny Lennon's side, who had beaten the Hoops in the semi-finals of the League Cup, while Paul Dummett was replaced in the 86th minute by striker Sam Parkin but to no avail.
Bradden Inman missed Crewe's home defeat to struggling Portsmouth with an ankle injury while Curtis Good was not involved for Bradford against York.
