Late Drama For Mehdi And His Merry Men

Written by Newcastle Utd

Mehdi Abeid set up a late equaliser for St. Johnstone as they drew 1-1 with league leaders Celtic

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Mehdi Abeid set up a late St. Johnstone equaliser as the men from Perth held Scottish Premier League champions-elect to a 1-1 draw at McDiarmid Park on Tuesday night.

Nigerian defender Efe Ambrose had headed the visitors in front shortly before half-time and that goal looked like being enough to give the Hoops another three points.

But then Newcastle youngster Abeid, who is on loan with the Saints until the end of the season, teed up Nigel Hasselbaink with eight minutes left.

In the fourth appearance of his loan spell, Abeid had earlier hit the side-netting after seizing on a slip by Ambrose, while his free-kick on 55 minutes was headed home by Steven MacLean only for a flag to be raised.

Their point lifted St. Johnstone up to fifth while Celtic are now 19 points clear at the top.
