After two successive wins, Newcastle were beaten by in-form Tottenham on Saturday but there was still plenty of room for optimism at White Hart Lane.
Gareth Bale was the difference, with a sublime free-kick and a wonderful run either side of Yoan Gouffran's effort for United.
It was a first goal in black and white for the Frenchman and substitute Shola Ameobi almost equalised in the dying seconds.
