Newcastle v Brighton: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The action as it happened from United's FA Cup with Budweiser third round tie at the Amex Stadium

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Brighton and Hove Albion 2 (Orlandi 32, Hoskins 86)
Newcastle United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: Anita's corner drops to Williamson at the far post but his shot is blocked by two Brighton bodies sliding in to block. That's the final act of the game as referee Probert's whistle blows and Newcastle bow out of the FA Cup. It's hard to deny that the home side deserved it, although Shola Ameobi's sending off could prove to be a talking point.

90mins: There will be three minutes of stoppage time.

89mins: Bridge dinks the ball into the box and Hoskins tries to take the ball around Elliot, but the keeper does well to grab it off him. Then at the other end Ankergren steals the ball away from Ranger as he tried to rush onto a through ball.

GOAL-MDC-icons86mins - BRIGHTON GOAL (2-0): Game over - Will Hoskins has made it 2-0 with four minutes to go after beating the offside trap to slot calmly past Elliot, who for the second time today had absolutely no chance. Newcastle's FA Cup hopes look to be over for another year and for the second season in a row, it's the Seagulls who have ended them.

84mins: The lively LuaLua cuts inside and sends a low shot just wide of Elliot's near post as Hoskins tries to get a foot to divert it into the net but can't quite connect.

SUB-MDC-icons82mins: Albion's final substitution sees Andrew Crofts replace Dean Hammond.

81mins: LuaLua tees up Bridge, whose shot from 18 yards hits Tavernier to carry it over the bar.

78mins: Today's attendance is 21,740 with 1,978 from Newcastle - superb support as always, especially considering the distance, the early kick-off and the fact that the game is live on television.

77mins: A great cross from Dummett is scrambled away by the home side, with Newcastle now piling on the pressure despite being a man down.

76mins: Sammy Ameobi makes a direct run into the box and sees his cross hit the thigh of Gordon Greer to almost spin into the net, but Ankergren makes a flying save to claw the ball away.

73mins: Marveaux almost makes an instant impact as his shot is blocked by a defender and loops over the bar. Then from the resulting corner, taken by Anita, Williamson heads back across goal and Ranger nods over.

SUB-MDC-icons70mins: A substitution for both sides - Sylvain Marveaux is on for Gabriel Obertan for Newcastle while Will Hoskins replaces Craig Mackail-Smith for the home side.

Yellow---Red-Card-MDC-icons61mins: Shola Ameobi, who was booked two minutes into the second half, is shown his second yellow card after a late tackle on David Lopez near the touchline. As soon as the Brighton player went down, the United skipper was in trouble and Lee Probert had little option but to flash the red card but it was a genuine attempt to win the ball and the decision seemed harsh at first glance. United, already a goal down, are now a man short too and Mike Williamson takes the armband.

SUB-MDC-icons60mins: Former United youngster Kazenga LuaLua comes on in place of goalscorer Orlandi, and the Congolese youngster will be keen to prove a point against his old club.

54mins: A free-kick from Anita is headed on by Shola Ameobi and falls invitingly to Ranger 12 yards out, but the substitute blazes a half-volley horribly off target much to the delight of the home crowd.

52mins: With Anita on the ground after a heavy tackle, Brighton play on and Orlandi shoots but sends his effort over the bar. Anita then manages to get to his feet and will be able to continue.

48mins: Anita aims a cross from the left towards Ranger, who goes down between two Brighton defenders in the box, but despite half-hearted appeals for a penalty nothing is given by Lee Probert.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons47mins: Shola Ameobi is yellow carded for a foul on Gary Dicker near the centre circle.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: United get the second half underway, kicking towards their own fans - hopefully the Toon Army can inspire the team to a better showing in this period. There are two changes at the break - Mehdi Abeid and James Perch are off with Nile Ranger and Paul Dummett on. It's a Newcastle debut for boyhood fan and local boy Dummett, fresh from an impressive loan spell at St. Mirren. Tavernier goes centre-back with Santon moving to right-back, with Dummett on the left while Ranger will partner Shola Ameobi up front.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: The Magpies trail at the break and have barely tested Casper Ankergren in the opening 45 minutes. Andrea Orlandi's goal is the difference and unless United can step it up a gear in the second period it's hard to see a different end result.

45mins: There will be one minute of stoppage time at the end of what's been a disappointing half for Newcastle United.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons40mins: Mehdi Abeid becomes the first Newcastle player to be booked after a foul near the halfway line - over-enthusiasm got the better of the youngster there.

36mins: Sammy Ameobi rolls the ball across for Anita to shoot from 25 yards but he cuts across the ball and it flashes wide.

34mins: Shola Ameobi tries to drag United back into the game with a low shot from the edge of the area but it's straight at Ankergren.

GOAL-MDC-icons32mins - BRIGHTON GOAL (1-0): United had been edging the last few minutes but the home side take the lead as Gordon Greer's diagonal ball is just kept in play by Wayne Bridge and the ex-England left-back's pin-point cross is hooked home by Andrea Orlandi, the former Swansea man.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons20mins: Shola Ameobi wins the ball from Hammond 35 yards from goal, allowing Gael Bigirimana to fire a shot from almost 30 yards which Ankergren can only beat away even though it's straight at him. Brighton scramble the ball behind and Hammond is booked for attempting to foul Ameobi after losing the ball.

15mins: Lopez, who has looked dangerous so far, fizzes in a cross from the right which swerves and would have gone straight in but for some good work from Rob Elliot, who repositioned himself well to hold onto the ball when a lesser keeper could easily have been caught out.

9mins: David Lopez does superbly to keep Liam Bridcutt's raking crossfield ball in play on the right, then digs out a fantastic cross which finds Gary Dicker at the far post and it requires a header from the well-positioned Perch to nod it off the line.

7mins: Gabriel Obertan tries to get in a cross from the left but it hits an Albion player to wrongfoot Casper Ankergren and almost drop into the net - alas, the deflection took most of the pace off the ball and so the Albion keeper was able to get to it in time to make a comfortable save.

2mins: Craig Mackail-Smith wins an early corner off James Perch after making an intelligent run into the right-hand channel and although Newcastle partially clear the flag-kick, it doesn't go far and Dean Hammond is able to get a shot away but it sails well over the bar.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 1min: Brighton, in their blue and white stripes, take kick-off against a Newcastle side wearing burgundy. There was a bit of light rain before kick-off but that's cleared up now. The Magpies sold their whole allocation and the fans are in fine voice as the game gets underway.
