Two penalties, one for each side, meant St. Mirren and Kilmarnock shared the points in Paisley on Wednesday - although Paul Dummett almost gave his side all three.
Playing the 19th and final game of his initial loan spell with the Saints, the left-back nearly added to the two goals he'd scored in his previous four appearances but was denied by Cammy Bell in the second half.
By then, Killie were ahead through Liam Kelly's spot-kick but Paul McGowan equalised, also from the spot, on 68 minutes.
Dummett played the full game but Newcastle team-mate Conor Newton, who signed on loan until the end of the season this week, was an unused substitute. St. Mirren have now lost just one of their last nine games, and that was against leaders Celtic.
