Bordeaux v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

Live text commentary from the Stade Chaban-Delmas where Newcastle were beaten by Bordeaux in their final Group D clash in the Europa League

Bordeaux 2 (Diabate 29, 72)
Newcastle United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 90+2mins: Bordeaux top Group D of the Europa League after Cheick Diabate's double gave them a 2-0 win over United, but the Magpies will also progress to the next round. Click here to read the match report.

90+1mins: It should be 3-0 as Bellion cuts the ball back to Ben Khalfallah 12 yards out, but the midfielder scuffs wide. It won't matter too much though - his side are going to win.

90mins: There will be two minutes of stoppage time as the Bordeaux fans begin to celebrate here at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.

SUB-MDC-icons 88mins: A first change for Bordeaux sees two-goal Diabate come off to a standing ovation. Hadi Sacko - one of only five subs named by Francis Gillot - comes on.

85mins: Tavernier sends in a high, hanging ball from the left and Abeid gets his head to it, but he was always going to struggle to generate the power and direction to cause Olimpa a problem and his effort goes wide.

83mins: Anita plays the ball into Ranger's feet and the striker, with his back to goal, cleverly rolls his marker before firing over the bar. It was great play from the young striker to create the opportunity and he's caused a few problems for the Bordeaux defenders tonight - it's just a shame about the end product on that occasion.

SUB-MDC-icons 81mins: The final change of the night for Newcastle sees Papiss Cisse enter the fray in place of Shola Ameobi, who was making his 200th start for the club tonight.

78mins: Again there's no flag as Saivet dubiously gets the wrong side of the United defence on the left hand side and cuts the ball back for Ben Khalfallah, whose low shot is well saved by Elliot. He manages to hold onto the ball too.

SUB-MDC-icons 73mins: In a substitution that Alan Pardew was about to make just before the second goal, Fabricio Coloccini comes on in place of Mike Williamson.

GOAL-MDC-icons 72mins - BORDEAUX GOAL: It's a second of the night for Diabate as Bordeaux look to have wrapped up top spot in the group. Poko's ball caught out the United defence and Diabate beat the offside trap to go clean through and slot past the exposed Elliot. It was something of a surprise not to see the flag go up but it didn't, and now it looks like game, set and match to the French side.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 68mins: James Tavernier is booked for a rash challenge on Saivet - the Bradford-born youngster held his hand up immediately and accepted the yellow card.

67mins: Elliot's free-kick from deep inside his own half is headed on by Ameobi and falls to Marveaux, whose shot is blocked by goalscorer Diabate and Anita's follow up is dragged wide. Then as United mount another attack, Marveaux goes for a cheeky dink from the edge of the area and almost catches Olimpa out, but the keeper gets a hand to the ball to field it.

57mins: The hosts attack down the right and although Bigirimana prods Bellion's cross half clear, it sits up for Sertic to flash a 20-yard strike narrowly off target. Newcastle are pushing for an equaliser but in doing so, they're playing a more open game and Bordeaux are looking to exploit that.

56mins: Saivet slips Diabate in 12 yards from goal but there's no second strike of the night from the frontman as he hits his shot wide.

54mins: Mehdi Abeid and Ranger hunt in a pack and combine to win the ball in midfied; Abeid advances and curls a shot goalwards - it goes narrowly wide and Olimpa didn't seem too worried, but it may have been a little closer than he realised.

52mins: A wonderful, raking crossfield ball from Bigirimana picks out Shola Ameobi just inside the box, allowing the United skipper to take a touch and register his side's first shot on target - but it's blocked by the legs of Olimpa. The resulting corner is cleared and Bordeaux break quickly, with Poko's cross well intercepted by the sliding James Perch.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons SUB-MDC-icons 46mins: It's a long walk from the dressing room to the pitch but both sides have now returned to the field and Newcastle have made a change with Sammy Ameobi replaced by Vurnon Anita. It's United who get things started and Ranger - now playing up front - immediately wins a flick-on with Anita just beaten to the ball by the Bordeaux keeper.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 45mins: With no injury time at all played, the half-time whistle blows and United trail. That means Bordeaux are on course to win Group D if things stay as they are but both sides will be going through to the next stage no matter what the result. The half-time report can now be read here.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 43mins: Mike Williamson becomes the first player to go into Masiah's book; he blocked off Bellion and although play continued for almost a minute, the referee then brought play back and yellow carded the United defender. He's not the Masiah - he's a very naughty boy...

40mins: Newcastle have had more of the ball than their opponents since going behind but haven't done a great deal with it and still trail - but remember, they have yet to lose a game in Europe this season.

GOAL-MDC-icons 29mins - BORDEAUX GOAL: The game had gone flat for ten minutes or so but suddenly the complexion changes dramatically as, out of nothing, the hosts take the lead. Ben Khalfallah crosses from a deep position on the left and his excellent delivery is begging to be headed home. Diabate duly obliges and even Elliot, as good as he's been tonight, could do nothing to prevent it from going past him.

18mins: A superb double-save from the inspired Elliot keeps the score at 0-0. Saivet plays the ball to ex-Sunderland man David Bellion, whose stinging low shot from inside the box is well parried by the keeper before Cheick Diabate pounces on the rebound but is also denied by the United shot-stopper - great reflexes from a player who seems to be improving all the time under Andy Woodman.

15mins: Andre Poko jumps in on Gael Bigirimana 25 yards from goal in a central position and referee Menashe Masiah rightly awards a free-kick to Newcastle. The Burundian teenager plays the ball short to Marveaux to change the angle and he hits a low shot from the right-hand side of the box but it zips wide.

11mins: Home skipper Gregory Sertic feeds Fahid Ben Khalfallah, who has time and space to size up a shot from 22 yards and does just that. It's a powerful effort which Elliot does well to get behind and beat firmly away from the danger zone, allowing United to clear their lines.

9mins: Nile Ranger wins a second corner for Newcastle in the space of a few minutes and goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa drops Sylvain Marveaux's delivery from the right under pressure from the United number 30, but a foul is given when there didn't seem to be too much contact and Ranger was ready to tap into an empty net.

2mins: A right-wing Bordeaux corner evades everybody and finds Henri Saivet at the far post. He takes a touch and drills a shot from 14 yards which is well tipped over the bar by Rob Elliot on his return to the side.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 1min: It's 7pm local time here in the South-West of France and we're underway at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. A Bordeaux win or a draw will see the hosts qualify for the next round of the Europa League as Group D winners, with Newcastle the runners-up, but three points for Alan Pardew's side will be enough for them to top the table; however with both teams definitely through, the two managers have made several changes. There are around 1,200 away fans in the corner to our right as Bordeaux, in their distinctive dark purple, pink and white kits take kick-off against the Magpies in their fluo-lime European kit.
