Demba Ba

It was a case of perfect ten for Demba Ba as he reached double figures for the season to help Newcastle return to winning ways against Wigan on Monday night.

And the Senegalese star was delighted to give the home fans something to shout about at St. James' Park after four straight defeats, including a heartbreaking late loss at Stoke.

The striker netted twice - once from the spot - as the Magpies won 3-0 against a Latics side reduced to ten men after Maynor Figueroa's early red card and gave his only interview of the evening to nufcTV.

He said: "It was very good to win after these last weeks. Now we just have keep our heads down, keep working and keep doing what we've done tonight.

"When you play like we played against Stoke, everything was not perfect but at least we've tried a lot and when you concede two goals in the last ten minutes it's very difficult to swallow and we just wanted to get back to winning ways in front of the fans - and we did.

"It's difficult for any team to play with one man down for 80 minutes and we just took advantage of it and we had good movement.

"For me it was a penalty - Papiss (Cisse) was alone and if he had taken the ball so I think the ref did what he had to do."

Ba insisted that recent speculation over his long-term future does not bother him, saying: "I didn't even know what was said in the papers because I didn't read the papers.

"All I know is that we've proved on the pitch tonight and what we did on Wednesday that we still have the spirit and still want to win and go forward."

He limped off in the closing stages on Monday but hopes to be fit for next week's fixture at Fulham and said: "I'll be okay - good treatment for the next few days and I'll be okay."
