Nile Ranger is set to make his first appearance of the season when Newcastle's under-21 side take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Monday (kick-off 7pm).
Due to injury, the 21-year-old hasn't played since he scored in the final match of his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday to help them win promotion to the Championship in May. but he recently returned to full training and is now set to start on Wearside in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League clash.
With Spanish striker Xisco and 17-year-old Adam Campbell both sidelined, the ex-England under-19 international is likely to lead the line against the Black Cats and with more than 50 first-team appearances for the Magpies, he's the most experienced player in Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley's squad.
Mehdi Abeid is the only other player with senior experience for United.
Curtis Good returns from international duty with Australia's under-20 side while JJ Hooper is involved under the terms of his work experience loan at Darlington, which allows him to play for both his parent club and the Quakers.
Academy defender Alex Kitchen and goalkeeper Freddie Woodman both played for the under-18s in a 6-1 defeat to Sunderland on Saturday. The hosts, meanwhile, include Connor Wickham and David Vaughan in their side.
