Newcastle v West Ham: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The action as it happened from St. James' Park, where Newcastle lost to Kevin Nolan's first-half goal for West Ham

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Newcastle United 0
West Ham United 1 (Nolan 38)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 90+5mins: Kevin Nolan's first-half goal has won it for West Ham. The former Newcastle skipper didn't celebrate his goal but former Magpies boss Sam Allardyce is beaming from ear to ear. Alan Pardew's side could have gone sixth with a win but have lost for the third time in the league this season.

90+4mins: Santon forces a corner and Tim Krul comes up for it. It's played short but Ben Arfa gets in a cross which is just too high for Krul and is half-cleared as far as Cabaye, whose 20-yard volley goes over the bar.

90mins: Obertan lays the ball off to Ameobi who shoots from 20 yards but there's no power behind the frontman's strike and it rolls into Jaaskelainen's arms. There will be five minutes of stoppage time though, and that's given the home supporters a boost.

88mins: There's been plenty of endeavour from Newcastle in these final few minutes but they have been unable to create any clear chances against this resolute West Ham side.

81mins: Ameobi's great flick-on allows Ba to get to the byline and cut the ball back to Obertan, who is forced wide and sees his attempt to get the ball across goal evade everybody.

SUB-MDC-icons 79mins: A last throw of the dice from Alan Pardew; Gabriel Obertan replaces Danny Simpson and Newcastle to to three at the back.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 76mins: Ben Arfa is booked as he shows his frustration, chasing a loose ball but catching only Guy Demel right under Mike Dean's nose.

72mins: Now it's Krul's turn to make a vital stop - and it's from Andy Carroll who was hoping to follow Kevin Nolan's lead in scoring against his old club. Nolan played the ex-Newcastle number nine in but Krul stood tall to block his shot.

71mins: Ben Arfa retrieves the ball after Ba's low cross had flashed across goal. The Frenchman cuts in from the left and sees his drive tipped wide by the Hammers keeper who has had a great second half.

69mins: Santon wins a corner on the left and Cabaye's delivery is met by Ameobi, but the striker's header goes narrowly wide of the post.

SUB-MDC-icons 67mins: George McCartney hobbles off to be replaced by Guy Demel for the away side which will mean O'Brien moving to left-back and the substitute playing on the right of the reshuffled back-line.

64mins: Anita finds Ba, who makes space 25 yards from goal and lets fly with a dipping effort which forces Jaaskelainen to push the ball around the post. Ben Arfa's right-wing corner almost flies straight in but the keeper tips the ball over the bar.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 61mins: Joey O'Brien has committed several fouls already today without any punishment, but he is finally booked for a foul on the rampaging Santon.

58mins: O'Neil arrives at the far post with a header but Krul gets his angles right to save easily and keep Newcastle in it.

SUB-MDC-icons 52mins: Newcastle are continuing to press as Ba sees a crisp low strike whistle past the far post. West Ham respond by making a change - Gary O'Neil replaces Yossi Benayoun.

51mins: Cabaye cuts in from the left and hits a low strike from the edge of the box which Jaaskelainen gets his whole body behind to collect into his chest.

47mins: Ba thinks he's equalised for Newcastle as he meets a looping ball from the left and heads the ball downwards where Jaaskelainen saves but possibly only after the ball had crossed the line. The home players and fans behind the goal were convinced that it was in, but it's not given and replays suggest that may have been the correct call.

WHISTLE-MDC-iconsSUB-MDC-icons 46mins: Newcastle begin the second half with Shola Ameobi on for Papiss Cisse at the break and United now kicking towards the Gallowgate end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

45+4mins: United trail at half-time and it's Kevin Nolan who has scored the only goal with a typical poacher's finish. It's been a poor game but Newcastle improved after going behind and will hope to turn it around after the break.

45+2: Ben Arfa's shot is deflected by a claret and blue shirt with wrongfoots Jaaskelainen but goes into the side-netting. Williamson's effort from the resulting corner is hacked away before the defender flicks the ball back into the danger area for Cabaye, whose powerful low shot is well parried by the goalkeeper.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 45mins: Mark Noble becomes the first player booked for a foul on Hatem Ben Arfa. There will be four minutes of added time.

44mins: Yohan Cabaye's raking pass is met by Demba Ba with a backwards header, but he can't direct it either side of Jaaskelainen who is able to gather.

43mins: Shane Ferguson comes close to his first goal for Newcastle but his goalbound strike is blocked after Mike Williamson's header had fallen to the Northern Irish youngster.

41mins: Nearly a second for Nolan, who was found by Maiga but curled wide from the edge of the box with the kind of opportunity he would normally expect to put away.

GOAL-MDC-icons 38mins - WEST HAM GOAL (0-1): Kevin Nolan returns to haunt Newcastle on his first return to St. James' Park by putting West Ham in front. Joey O'Brien's shot was going wide but the Hammers captain stuck out a leg to divert it past Krul from close range. Fair play to Nolan, he refuses to celebrate in front of the Gallowgate fans who once adored him, but he has given the Magpies a mountain to climb.

36mins: Today's attendance is 51,855 with a following of 2,700 from East London.

SUB-MDC-icons 34mins: Matt Jarvis is replaced with Modibo Maiga for the visitors in what looks to be a tactical change - Sam Allardyce clearly wants a striker alongside Carroll to profit from the big man's knock-downs.

25mins: The game's first shot on target comes from Newcastle, but it's an easy save for Jussi Jaaskelainen. Cabaye tried his luck from 25 yards but saw his effort go straight into the Finnish keeper's arms.

SUB-MDC-icons 24mins: Gutierrez makes way for Vurnon Anita in what will be a straight swap in midfield.

23mins: Jonas Gutierrez goes down again after making a tackle on Mohamed Diame and this time it looks like he won't be able to carry on. The Argentine hasn't been moving freely for some time and now it looks as though his afternoon is over.

21mins: Benayoun shoots well wide of the goal with the outside of his boot as he let fly on the half-volley from the edge of the penalty area.

19mins: Cisse outpaces Reid as the pair chase a pass from Gutierrez, but although the striker gets there first his shot trickles wide - he didn't hit that as cleanly as he'd have hoped.

10mins: Gutierrez and Yossi Benayoun go in for a 50-50 tackle near the halfway line and both are hurt. Eventually, the pair stagger to their feet after treatment but both continue to limp.

8mins: Referee Mike Dean somehow awards the visitors a free-kick when Demba Ba seemed to be more sinned against than the sinner, and Mark Noble pumps it into the box for Winston Reid to head back across goal towards Nolan, whose effort is blocked.

6mins: Just a few minutes into his return to St. James', Nolan has headed back down the tunnel - but it's only to change his boots and he comes back on after a quick pit-stop in the dressing room.

3mins: Matt Jarvis arrives at the far post but shoots well wide from a narrow angle with what is the first chance of the game.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 1min: On Remembrance Sunday, a minute's silence is held before the big event and captains Jonas Gutierrez and Kevin Nolan lay wreaths on the centre circle. The two sides are wearing poppies on their shirts and West Ham kick off, attacking towards the Gallowgate end in the first half.
