Club Brugge v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The action as it happened from the Jan Breydel Stadion, where Newcastle were in Europa League action against Club Brugge

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Club Brugge 2 (Trickovski 14, Jorgansen 19)
Newcastle United 2 (Anita 41, Sh. Ameobi 43)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 90+2mins: It's all over and Newcastle have produced a battling display for their loyal supporters who have travelled to Belgium in such impressive numbers. Two goals down inside the opening 20 minutes, they fought back as Vurnon Anita scored his first goal for the club and Shola Ameobi netted yet another in Europe. It means the Magpies aren't through to the next stage just yet, but they're not far off.

90mins: There will be two minutes added on at the Jan Breydel Stadion.

88mins: From the free-kick, which is cleverly worked to Jesper Jorgensen, the Brugge man's shot flies just wide with Krul at full stretch. The home fans thought that was in.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 87mins: Bacca goes down in the box claiming a penalty as he's challenged by Taylor, but referee Luca Banti waves away his appeals. However, Cabaye is booked seconds later for a foul near the corner flag.

SUB-MDC-icons 83mins: Romain Amalfitano comes on in United's third and final change, replacing Sammy Ameobi who can be pleased with his night's work.

SUB-MDC-icons 81mins: Odjidja makes way for Nathaniel Lagrou for the final nine minutes as the hosts try to turn one point into three.

80mins: Tchite cuts inside from the left and sends a cracking strike arrowing towards the net, but Steven Taylor makes a crucial block as he gets his body in the way to ensure that Krul isn't called into action this time - and it's just as well because he may not have been getting to that.

78mins: Odjidja sets himself up for a shot with some clever control as he flicks the ball up for himself and lets fly, but his effort from nearly 30 yards goes well wide. Newcastle are hanging on at the moment.

77mins: And another top drawer save from the Newcastle keeper. Vadis Odijidja's crisp low shot is going into the bottom corner but the Dutchman dives left and throws out a big hand to tip it around the post.

75mins: Krul makes a fine save to tip Tchite's header from Tom Hogil's perfect cross over the bar. It looked like the sub was going to put Brugge back in front but the keeper had other ideas and it's still 2-2. In a week when his former colleague Fraser Forster put in a huge European display against Barcelona, Krul is showing why he is Newcastle's number one.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 73mins: Carl Hoefkens is booked for bringing down Sammy Ameobi after the youngster had nutmegged him and was heading into the penalty area. Cabaye's free-kick evades everybody and rebounds back off the far post - it didn't look like a shot but it almost went straight in and Marveaux shot over when the ball came back out to him.

SUB-MDC-icons 72mins: Alan Pardew makes his second substitution as Yohan Cabaye comes on for Gael Bigirimana in midfield.

65mins: What a chance for Bacca to restore the hosts' lead - he has virtually a free header as the ball comes in from the right but can only guide it over the bar.

61mins: Bacca does enough to hold off Taylor and get in a shot on the turn from close range which Krul does well to block. The game is really stretched with both sides going for it and it's making for a great spectacle.

60mins: Marveaux, who has been much more involved in this second half, cuts inside from the right and sends a dipping effort just over the bar. Newcastle are now attacking towards their own supporters and that seems to be helping them - they're on top now, a point proven as Tavernier slides in Sammy Ameobi whose low strike just lacks enough power to really test Jorgacevic.

SUB-MDC-icons 58mins: Mike Williamson comes off to be replaced by Steven Taylor. Williamson gives the travelling fans a well-deserved clap and is applauded back by the Toon Army.

56mins: Tchite, the Brugge substitute, makes room for a shot from 18 yards out and it stings the palms of Krul but the Dutchman has got his angles right and manages to get his body behind the ball to keep it out.

52mins: Big Shola robs Jordi to create an opportunity and his placed effort is well blocked by Jorgacevic but the keeper is relieved that Sammy, who is following up, just can't stretch his long legs enough to divert the ball home.

51mins: Shola Ameobi gets a powerful header to Marveaux's corner but can only send it over the bar as United start the second half on the front foot.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 47mins: Michael Almeback is shown a yellow card for a late tackle on James Tavernier, who had shown him a clean pairs of heels on the left, and although Brugge get the free-kick away Shola Ameobi eventually gets in a shot but it's easily saved by the home keeper.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons SUB-MDC-icons 46mins: The Ameobi brothers, who combined so well for that equalising goal, kick off the second half with one change for the hosts - Trickovski is off with Mohamed Tchite on in his place.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 45mins: With no stoppage time played, it's half-time and goals from Vurnon Anita and Shola Ameobi just before the break have seen Newcastle roar back into a match they seemed to be out of.

GOAL-MDC-icons 43mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-2): What a turn around. Two goals in two minutes and the Magpies are level. It's Sammy Ameobi who sets up his brother with a clever ball in the box to allow the striker to cooly slot home for his second goal of the season - both in Europe.

GOAL-MDC-icons 41mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): The Newcastle fans go mad and go mental and it's bedlam in the away end. A hopeful cross from the left is half-cleared but only as far as Vurnon Anita and he shows all the technique you'd expect from a former Ajax player to volley the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards. It's a spectacular first goal for the club from the Dutchman and it puts the Magpies back in with a shout.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 37mins: Cheick Tiote becomes the first player booked for hauling back Trickovski, the scorer of the first goal.

35mins: From Sammy Ameobi's quick throw, Shola holds off a defender and gets in a shot on the turn which goes across goal. United are creating a few opportunities but need one of them to go in.

30mins: The Ameobi brothers, starting a match together for the first time, combine well as Sammy crosses from the right with the aid of a deflection and Shola climbs above a defender to send a header goalwards only for Jorgacevic to tip it over the bar. From the corner, Mike Williamson sees a header blocked and Brugge escape.

24mins: Obertan's speed again creates a chance for his side as he beats the full-back and crosses low towards Sylvain Marveaux, but the former Rennes man takes an air shot and misses completely.

23mins: It's Jordi versus the Geordies as the Club Brugge full-back advances and shoots but Krul gets down to save relatively easily.

GOAL-MDC-icons 19mins - CLUB BRUGGE GOAL (2-0): From 22 yards out, Jesper Jorgansen lets fly and sees his low drive zip past Krul, who was at full stretch but couldn't get to it. United could have booked their place in the next round with a win but that looks unlikely now.

15mins: Sammy Ameobi tries to make something happen as he jinks into the box but the 20-year-old - called up for England under-21 duty earlier today - sees his effort blocked.

GOAL-MDC-icons 14mins - CLUB BRUGGE GOAL (1-0): United trail to a goal all too similar to the one they conceded against Liverpool last weekend. Donk plays the ball over the top and Ivan Trickovski assumes the role of Luis Suarez as he outpaces Coloccini, controls the ball superbly and finishes cooly past Krul. It's the first goal in Europe that United have conceded in the fluo-lime kit.

12mins: Obertan's pace on the break is United's best outlet at the moment and after good work from Sammy Ameobi to play him in, the Frenchman opens up his body to shoot from 16 yards but sees Bojan Jorgacevic - the keeper he scored past in the reverse fixture - deny him with a vital parry.

11mins: Ryan Donk, the former West Brom man, sends a half-volley wide after popping up 25 yards from goal when Newcastle thought they'd got the ball clear.

9mins: A sloppy clearance from Krul is charged down by Bacca on the left-hand side of the box and the frontman tries to cut it back across goal for one of his team-mates, but Coloccini is there to mop up and spare his goalkeeper's blushes.

3mins: A good, positive start from the Magpies as Gabriel Obertan picks up the ball and races goalwards before hitting a low strike just wide of the near post from the edge of the area.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 1min: The stadium is a little over half full with plenty of empty seats which Club Brugge decided against selling to Newcastle fans, but we're underway under the floodlights at what is 7pm Belgian time. Loud techno music has blasted out of the tannoy speakers for the last hour or so but even that couldn't drown out those Magpies supporters who have been able to gain entry and they remain in full voice as Brugge take kick-off to get us started. Alan Pardew's side, captained by Fabricio Coloccini, are in their fluo-lime European kit while the hosts are in an Inter Milan-style uniform of blue and black stripes.
